Offseason Part 3 - Because Part 2 Was a Dud

That doesn’t make all that much sense to me as Giolito is really the only young player that will command significant dollars to keep.

I just looked at our multi-year table. 2025 seems like the year where we'll need to spend a lot to retain guys. TA is a FA. Grandal is a FA (and probably too old to re-sign to a big deal). Hendriks is a FA. Kopech and Cease will both be arb 3, so if they end up being as good as they can, will cost a lot in arbitration.

  • Yes. Sox would forfeit like the 65th pick, the bonus pool amount associated and $500K in international space. They should be willing to do it though.  This offseason hasn't been a good one for

If the Padres sign Soler, I have a terrible feeling that the Sox will end up with Myers for RF in a Kimbrel trade. Soler currently does not fit on that Padres roster.

Myers, Grisham, Soler, Profar

Machado, Kim, Cronenworth, Hosmer, Voit

Everybody else goes up though.

With reasonable guesses for arb and options, I eyeballed the White Sox payroll next year at $170 million +. A lot of that is guaranteed thanks to the bullpen additions…and that’s without Abreu.

Yoan’s contract rises substantially

I know this was a long time ago, but Hahn signed David Robertson to a 4 year deal that was the biggest ever for a reliever. Hendriks, again, broke the AAV record for a reliever when he signed a 3+1 deal with the Sox. How are either of those contracts less risky than giving a 4th or even a 5th year to Conforto?

I know the money is dramatically different, but Kendall Graveman has thrown 56 good innings in his career. And those came in a year where he out pitched his peripherals by ~1.5 runs. They gave him 3 years. Isn't that risky?

I can't answer that cause I don't value relievers as much as Rick Hahn does.

Timmy and Cease in the coming years

The Sox have TA locked up through his age 31 season. Worrying about how you're going to pay a 32 year old Tim Anderson seems crazy to me.

Of course caulfield is the one to give us the latest on the Padres depth chart.

2024 he might just be pricing himself off the roster without 2019ish numbers…although you can argue he is still worth it even at a walk and defense driven 4ish fWAR.

Then why would they sign Soler? lol

@fathom - If the Sox free up $16M from trading Kimbrel, what do you expect them to do with the savings.

Literally no one on earth does, lol. I'm not trying to be critical even, I would just love to hear his justification for continuing to do this. It's not just the contracts, but drafting Burdi and the way they developed Sale, Crochet, & Kopech was also out of the norm for what I think 29 other teams would have done.

Some of the memes on the White Sox sub about Hahn's love of relievers are pretty funny.

Use it to pay the salary of a pitcher in a trade and get a backup catcher.  I absolutely don’t think Conforto happens.  For the record, I don’t think there’s a shot of getting a team to pick up Kimbrel’s whole contract while getting a hint of substance back.

I still remember the few years where the Sox thought they were smarter than other teams and drafted a ton of closers in the top ten rounds.  The goal was to build depth and not have to spend a lot on relievers in the future.

Focus on winning now and just trade some when the time comes.

That being said, the Sox will need introduce some young players into key roles over the next couple years.  Romy, Popeye, or possibly Yogurt will need take on the 2B and/or utility roles.  Crochet might have to move to the rotation in 2023.  And we need to develop some god damn relievers.

'He's gonna be a star hitter' + 'he's not a bad fielder'? He here.

Look on the bright side — we've got a 130 wRC+ lefty. His name is Gavin Sheets, son of Larry.

Nah he's just a flash in the pan, cherry picked AB's terrible RF and 1st baseman. He got lucky there are so many RHP who pitch terribly in the AL Central that a AAAA player could hits bombs off them. That McCullers dude just hung one to him in the playoffs. Brian Goodwin would've hit that one out too.

Soler can’t dictate a 4-5 year deal…that’s nuts.

If it is close to reality, there’s no way Conforto gets less than four, and possibly five.

Seat at the table?  Not even in the same room.  We’re in the poolhouse, outhouse, gazebo, some outlying structure.

And you don’t think Conforto happens simply because of these random Twitter insiders?

Just nothing linking the Sox to him. After a while, no news means no interest, IMO.

I notice you didn’t include 2018.

At any rate, $24-25 million players are not in JR’s price range unless superstars.

It was the death of Ordonez, CLee and Buehrle…Ventura, etc.
