The trade was a wash based on talent.

Then you get the mental makeup of the players and that is where you see that Boston had the upper hand in the deal on what they knew.

You have to remember that Sale has been healthy for exactly 1.5 seasons since that trade. Sox did fine.

I am also not willing to believe that Devers would have developed the same in Chicago as he did in Boston.

The entire fucking team does. When your manager has the energy of a corpse, what do people expect? They need an injection of energy and excitement in the dugout. TLR was one of the worst fits I've eve

But you could have maybe gotten something better.  Wonder if Bregman could have been had?  Or Devers?  This clearly could turn out a win-win.. But as it stands, the Red Sox got the better deal, given they won the world series and Sale was a massive part of that

Sale didn't really help them though. He got injured in July and pitched out of the bullpen a couple times during that run. They didn't need Sale to win that year.

This is the same argument as Chapman in 2016.

Cubs or Red Sox fans will argue to the end those two players were absolutely critical.  And, for that reason, those trades will never be perceived as losses for those respective franchises.  That said, the Sale contract signed with Boston has become a bit of an albatross.

I remember watching an interview with Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe shortly after the Sale trade, and he said then that Devers was a much better prospect than Moncada, and that it was a great trade for Boston.

Sale was an enormous talent with some big emotional issues. Hopefully Moncada will recover from his health issues and get his act together. Maybe the Sox could have done better, but I wouldn't lose sleep over this trade. Has Sale cut up any Red Sox uniforms?

No, I think Drake LaRoche's leadership has led to a growing-up of sorts for Sale.

(update - I now realize it was Eaton who called Drake a "leader," not Sale)

I have nothing to add. Grandal and Moncada's struggles are mystifying to me. Although Moncada's sample size is smaller.

Hope they figure it out!

But Sale was a part of the same chorus with Eaton if I remember correctly.

that he was... but lower comedic value by not having been directly quoted.

Ha, well, this is true.  I lost a lot of respect for both after those absurd tirades.
