2023: MLB news not AL Central-related

Featured Replies

DH: Shohei Ohtani, Angels

The Angels emphasized their intention to keep Ohtani this winter, shooting down any talk of an offseason trade. But what if Los Angeles finds itself out of the race by May or June? The demand for Ohtani would be enormous, igniting a bidding war for the two-way superstar. Ohtani’s $30 million salary in 2023 is high, though it wouldn’t stop a number of teams from pursuing him for a second-half run to the postseason.

Buzz factor: High. This is not to say that people expect Ohtani to be dealt, but should the Angels make him available, he would immediately become the most highly sought-after trade candidate in years (or decades?). If the Angels don’t think they can retain him at the end of the season and aren’t true postseason contenders, it would be crazy for them not to entertain the idea of bringing back a haul of prospects for Ohtani.

Who else but the Dodgers would/could put this trade together for the 2nd half of the season?

Looking good to get 15 games in Thursday. San Diego has one of the worst forecasts.

Mets the current favorite to sign Ohtani this offseason...

"The Chicago Cubs have the second-shortest odds to land Ohtani if he leaves the Mets. At +500 odds, Chicago has proved that they are willing to spend big bucks in free agency. One needs to look no further than this past winter when they spent over $300 million to improve their roster.

Next on the BetOnline odds board are the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and San Diego Padres who are all listed at +600."

Guardians slight favorite at 13th best team odds to sign over White Sox (14th) to sign Shohei Ohtani.

Sox tied with four other teams btw.

Rays after Wander Franco deal shockingly not last.  Rockies and Orioles remain enigmas spending-wise, and Detroit Tigers fans might feel a bit discouraged.

Minor leaguers, MLB reach tentative deal on 1st CBA, sources say

10:22 AM CT

Jeff PassanESPN

Minor league baseball players and Major League Baseball struck a tentative deal Wednesday on the first collective bargaining agreement between the sides that will more than double player pay, sources familiar with the agreement told ESPN.

The deal, which will last for five years, comes after a rapid and successful effort last year by minor leaguers to unionize under the umbrella of the Major League Baseball Players Association and follows previous gains in housing and pay.

The pay increases at each level are significant, according to sources, and will pay players in spring training as well as the offseason, outside of a dead period between the Thursday before Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. At each level, the increases will be:

AAA: From $17,500 per year to $35,800

AA: $13,800 to $30,250

High-A: $11,000 to $27,300

Low-A: $11,000 to $26,200

Complex league: $4,800 to $19,800

The deal also will include the reduction of the Domestic Reserve List, which governs the number of players a team can roster outside of Latin America, from 180 to 165 starting in 2024. The union, which does not include players at teams' Dominican Republic complexes as part of its bargaining unit, fought MLB's efforts to reduce the reserve list during the lockout last year.

Isn't the Thursday before Thanksgiving essentially the same as saying one week before Thanksgiving?

I know he doesn't have the track record of Realmuto or Will Smith, but I think he'll be the best catcher in baseball this season.

AL 3-0 in interleague today

This is nuts.

Pirates might hand out a 100M contract before the White Sox for those keeping track at home.
