Possible 2nd round target.

Interesting.

Haven't seen him play. I don't love the strikeout rate. I see that he's playing SS instead of 3B this year. I presume he looks decent there. I certainly get the appeal of a LH hitting, up the middle guy with some thump in the bat.

He's not a SS but has a good chance to stay on the dirt.  I'd much rather take a player like that at pick 43, 68 or later instead of pick 5.

It would be a great plan.  I think they're gonna go pitching heavy but it would be nice if they were able to mix in a couple HS bats towards the top.

You think they are leaning pitching with 1-5 then?

64. Derek Curiel
OF

Ht: 6'2" | Wt: 175 | B-T: L-L

School: Orange (Calif.) Lutheran HS. Commit/Drafted: LSU

Age At Draft: 19.2

Curiel has an ease of operation to his game that stands out at the plate and in the field. He has a calm, balanced swing that’s quick, fluid and direct to the ball with good bat control and strike-zone discipline. His contact rate stacks up among the best in the 2024 class with good plate coverage and a knack for going with where the ball is pitched to use the whole field. Curiel has a wiry frame that he has started to add strength to, which has helped him generate more bat speed and extra-base damage at times. He’s still listed at 6-foot-2, 175 pounds and scouts do wonder how much physicality and strength he’ll pack on in the future, and therefore what his power upside might be. It’s his on-base skills that stand out more than his power, but he drives the ball well during BP, and there could be another uptick in power once he fills out and learns which pitches to try to drive for pull-side damage in the air. He’s been a plus runner in the past, but in the 2023 showcase season he more frequently turned in average run times from home to first. Curiel has above-average center field instincts and glides around the outfield with an easy stride, efficient routes and has an average, accurate arm. He is committed to LSU.

That means at least 2 years in Arizona Summer League.

Not at least.  Maybe two for some guys who are young or behind like Wolkow.  It was really fucking stupid to eliminate the short season leagues now a lot of HS players are stuck in between (who could've seen that coming) but there are HS players from last years draft who are currently in low A.

Nobody looks to have mentioned trey yesavage from ECU. Had to be rising up draft boards.  Was already a fringe first rounder preseason. I have seen him many times and he is pretty much unhittable. 7-1, 54 IP with 28 hits and 86Ks. 10 might be too high, but 2nd round would be a gift.

A few years ago, I said we should draft gavin williams from ECU. We didn't, he flew up to the majors.  We did take Montgomery that draft so we did OK.
