It’s obviously too much money…but I don’t mind it as much after watching how the Sox operate. It shows they care about their product. They make investments in the city of LA, MLB, the Dodgers brand, and baseball fans around the world. Sends a strong message to all that the game is worth it. But hey…good for the Sox on landing Erick Fedde. We believe.

Unless they become a super team like the Patriots or the mid to late 90s Yankees...the combination of those two brands (LAD/Ohtani) still lifts the sport because he's almost impossible to ignore like he was with the Angels not making the postseason.

December 9, 20232 yr Author Pretty sure that will end up doubling all new AL Central offseason spending by all FIVE teams combined... Also, understandable why Boras and Harper were already talking extension/re-negotiations lol. Edited December 9, 20232 yr by caulfield12
December 9, 20232 yr Their total luxury salary is all that matters. Them getting more people to pay the subscription is all that matters. They’ve been able to integrate cheap talent for a decade. They’ll be fine.

It’s not about the Jersey sells, just wait till LA gets a television deal in Japan for Dodger games. That alone will probably cover most of the contract.

At that price, the Dodgers had to he bidding against themselves though. In a vacuum, it's an absolutely terrible contracts. That doesn't mean it will cripple the franchise or anything like that.
December 9, 20232 yr Author Just think of all the players around the world in Latin America and even places like India China etc., who will now take up the sport... It's actually a huge boon for baseball because it will force out the owners who are unwilling to spend in order to compete. Kansas City, for example, spent 10-15 years protesting the Evil Empire Yankees....and finally did some things about it with two World Series titles in a row. Dodgers still have lots of ifs in the starting rotation with Kershaw Urias Buehler Gonsolin May criminal charges/injuries/recoveries.

I posted this in another comment. An economist did measure it. $337mil in 2022 (Japan and USA combined) though you should probably not consider his salary in the equation. How Much Revenue Does Shohei Ohtani Actually Generate? It probably increases playing in Los Angeles for a brand like the Dodgers. Of course, this is assuming he continues to pitch at a high level which is a big risk. Any investment is risky but it seems like a good one. Edited December 9, 20232 yr by nrockway

Was execting $500-550 million after the pitching injury...this number is just shocking. It's almost like LIV trying to buy out the PGA...except it's one franchise. The Yankees/Red Sox don't even seem relevant in the face of this kind of move. (Yet everyone recalls the initial reaction in STL to Pujols leaving. Things don't always go as planned.)

It will be interesting to see the financials of the deal when they get released but If most of money is deferred and doesn’t put a strain on the Dodgers luxury tax threshold giving them flexibility to bring in even more players then there is zero reason it is a terrible contract. Not even hating on teams anymore that do these things, just pissed we don’t have an owner that can’t understand in order to make money you gotta spend money.

Almost every pitching expert has come to conclusion he has roughly 3-4 more years of shelf life on the pitching side of things.
December 9, 20232 yr The Dodgers now own the number 1 and number 7 largest contracts in the history of all sports.

No other team in all of sports has that owner, so don't be too upset. Ohtani is making more than Messi. That's just crazy.

Still even then it’s worth every penny that they are going to make off of him. They probably don’t care about year 5 and beyond. At that point the money will have been recouped and I’m sure LA will have spent another 500 mil on a future player to join their team.
December 9, 20232 yr I don't think people realize how low on the popularity list baseball is internationally.

Don’t have the numbers in front of me but Steve Cohen will have paid close to more money than the entire Sox payroll on players leaving his organization over the past year or so then JR will have spent on the 2024 on the field product. There are plenty of owners out there that understand spending money will ultimately make you money.

Probably the Korean pitcher the White Sox helped with intl.bonus pool money lol. Dodgers might as well sign the Korean outfielder too and control all of Asia...sets up a huge battle for him with SD and SF. Mariners fans have to be getting antsy now too. Dylan Cease Trade Show starts in earnest now...obviously.
