September 24, 2025Sep 24 Tigers magic number over the Astros is 4, Chances are the Guardians and Tigers will be playing again next week, and the winner goes to Seattle. Sucks the Tigers are blowing the division, but get a second chance next week. Six teams after 162 is too many.

Much better than the NBA with their newly-revised playoff system. NFL can do whatever they want and people will just eat it up.

We did have a 15 game lead to start August though.

One of the most disappointing things I had ever seen was when the 1993 Giants and Braves ended with 103 and 104 wins and the Giants went home. Having so many different teams with actual stakes with a week left is fun

September 25, 2025Sep 25 cleveland is my least favorite team in the league (besides the cubs) but i can't help but laugh about detroit's total collapse. they were up 9.5 games 2 weeks ago, now they're down a game. "100% playoff odds" reminds me of the 2016 election "polling wizards". oops
September 25, 2025Sep 25 Guardians 17-2 last 19 Tigers 7-20 last 27 and lost eight in a row Edited September 25, 2025Sep 25 by caulfield12

I understand fully that there was no realistic chance they would but if they were running the model on pure statistics the White Sox always had a minuscule chance until mathematical elimination took hold, probably under 1% after May 15th but not completely 0. Maybe their model had the Indians at less than .5% thus rounded to zero. Sox could mathematically not be that low from day 1....well I guess maybe they could. I'm killing too many brain cells on this.

Considering that a 41 win team with no improvements to speak of going into a season was a how many standard deviation case at being able to make the playoffs? Even 3 is a 0.3% chance. 4 is a 99.9937, of which both are effectively 0. We are talking a 45 to 50 win improvement in one year. The biggest improvement in MLB history one year over another is 35, which gets us to 76 wins, or 10 to 15 STILL short of the playoffs.

September 25, 2025Sep 25 Tigers were at just under 80% to make the postseason entering today. Probably closer to 75% with Houston up 9-0. Starting a rookie today in Melton against another rookie in Messick. Does Hinch get fired if they miss out on the postseason?
September 25, 2025Sep 25 Tigers come out swinging...two solo homers from Jones and W.Perez. 2-0 Detroit bottom 1 Montero and Paddack as the bulk Tigers' relievers for Melton ... Detroit will need a solid cushion to hold the lead until innings 7-9. "A wounded animal is the most dangerous..." Great defensive player by Perez in RF as well to rob Ramirez. September 25, 2025Sep 25 3-0 Tigers Guardians starters hadn't allowed more than two runs in 19 consecutive games...17-2 stretch.
September 26, 2025Sep 26 If the Tigers and Guardians win by 9 tonight, they watch Astros and Angels- and if the Angels win- the Tigers, Guardians, and Red Sox all clinch a playoff spot. That would be anti-climactic.
