Mena is a RH that throws 92 and has inconsistent command. Of all the people on here that shouldn't care about trading a kid that doesn't throw hard, it should be you.

Then why was Thorpe the main trade chip back for Cease?  Can’t have it both ways.  I also happen to think Mena has more in the tank.

Not freaking panic during the first four weeks of a rebuild?

Panicking would he calling up Schultz, Montgomery and Thorpe and then trading Robert  DFA'ing Horn is not panicking.

Besides, if you're going to panic, starting 3-22 seems like a decent time to start

So the 24 year old in A ball with a 4.70 ERA is doing well, but the 21 year old in AAA with a 3.75 ERA is a “work in progress”?  You Getz apologists are trying way too hard.

No, I'm more of a "reality apologist". I don't really look at ERA. Gowen's age appropriate for high-A. His WHIP is 1.043, he's striking out 10/9 and only walking 3.5/9. If Mena can't get his BB/9 number down, he won't have success in the bigs.

I understand the frustration. This team sucks. It's not true they got nothing of value for Bummer. I wish they still had Mena, too. I still think it's too soon to label the trade a complete fleecing. People are proclaiming this team a complete s%*#-show where the true prospects shouldn't be brought up to this clown car to just fail, but then we proclaim Fletcher and Sosa as failures because they faltered in this clown car. Pick a lane.

Sox went for quantity over quality.  Other teams were absolutely interested in him, but Getz used it as a trade to fill roster spots at the big league level.

Yeah, teams really wanted a LH reliever with a 6.9 era over 59 innings. I'm sure Getz phone was ringing off the hook.

Cristian Mena is walking 5.9/9. He's still a work in progress.

That’s the whole fucking point.  He’s a work in progress with at least some mild chance of MLB success.  What exactly would you call Martin, Ortega, or Robbie Grossman at this point?  What is Paul DeJong?  At least Pham and Clevinger might end up being at least near competent MLB players but this roster is largely composed of a bunch of old journeyman that is on pace for the worst record in league history.

You're the one that talks about nothing but velocity, not me.

Wasn't Mena at 93-95 more recently?

Sounds like you are talking about Thorpe.

I just don’t understand what they saw in Fletcher.  Limited power, limited speed, can’t hit lefties at all….is this really the corner outfielder you want to give playing time for the next 3-4 years?  If they thought Mena was never going to throw hard enough, that’s fine to trade him, but it sure seemed like they put too much value on someone they could play right away.   Anyone with a brain knew this team wasn’t contending this year.

They run Fletcher off for some old guy. Maybe Getz gambles.

He’s just throwing buckets of s%*# at the wall and hoping that eventually something sticks.  There’s zero long term strategy here.

I fully expect Montgomery to be called up any day at the rate we are going.  Look it is one thing to sign vets as place holders so as to NOT rush players, but the fact that other kids (no matter how marginal, they have a better chance at future value than Rafael Fucking Ortega does) are getting released to make room for this trash, that is a problem.  When you KNOW you have no present value, you stop worrying about present value.  You start worrying about your future value.  Trading a low level guy for a lefty specialist, and then releasing him two months later to make room for a guy who has no future with your team is just stupid.  Now you have blown through two potential future pieces (again, no matter how small those odds are) for a guy with no future at all.  Why?  So you can lose 105 games instead of 110?  JFC how stupid can this franchise be?

From what I heard, some of the smarter teams in baseball were interested in him at the deadline and during the offseason.    Don’t forget that a lot of other teams didn’t care about the performance of Sox players last year due to awful environment and defense.

The Sox obviously value velocity less than other teams. Pitchers routinely lose a couple MPH when we acquire them. You care about velocity more than anyone in this site. That's why it makes no sense for you to cry about Mena.

From what you heard? I respect your opinion man, but you're a message board poster.

And Fletcher's a work in progress, too. They shouldn't have signed Maldonado. I call Ortega and Grossman AAA depth, which they had to tap into with 3 key injuries. No, Paul DeJong isn't a guy who puts the team on his shoulders and carries them for 3 weeks. But he is a bounce back candidate who can field his position.

No, they weren't going to contend, but they still have to play the games. Fletcher has upside, and Barfield probably saw him as a young-ish outfielder a team would let go with a logjam.

So why not just let Merkin and Reifert and Boyer run SoxTalk?

Sounds like the only way to get some real objectivity around here.

I don't think you're wrong, but the majority of these moves are completely inconsequential.

If he traded Montgomery for some serviceable MLB players so that we could win 60 games, then I would be irate. These other moves really don't matter.

They’re playing?  You could field a team full of five year olds and only have three less wins.

What’s the upside to Fletcher?  Below average power and speed who can’t hit lefties as a corner outfielder.

He chose between McCarthy and Fletcher.

Two 26 year olds.

At least Jake has held his own as a major leaguer this season.
