Potential Crochet Trade discussion Thread

I don't think the Red Sox are the frontrunners for Soto. I think the New York teams will battle it out . So I think Crochet is the trade the Red Sox will want. They just need to squeeze the Red Sox for a Number 1 attraction in their package not Abreu as a Number 1. If Red Sox do get Soto, I think Boston will go for a lesser SP target than Crochet.

Why? I would think opposite. Go all in. Especially since you have Soto under contract for longer some of the guys you would have under control and move them to help now.

^admittedly, I haven’t seen Mayo play 3b but I saw an awful lot of these types of posts from Orioles fans over the last two months of the season. Sounds to me like he isn’t even serviceable at 3b without dramatic improvements.

From Baseball America this summer on Mayo:

" Mayo has some of the best power in the minors. He’s hit .308/.384/.619 with 23 home runs in 81 games. The biggest questions surrounding Mayo’s readiness revolve around his defense. He’s had throwing accuracy issues–nine of his 10 errors at third base have come on inaccurate throws. He’s really struggled when he’s asked to play first base. Mayo has committed six errors in just 20 games at first base, including three errors in 11 games at first base in July."

My take:

I will ignore his 17 game MLB call up that was a disaster for the time being, he is only 22.

Read between the lines, Mayo is a defensive liability that may not be able to stick at anything but DH. Sox need to look for players that can actually stick on the field defensively in a trade.

Agreed. I don’t understand the fascination with Mayo. He’ll be lucky to produce 2 fWAR seasons even if he hits 40 bombs because of his defensive shortcomings. I really hope the Sox steer clear of him if they make a trade with Baltimore. I’m far more interested in Basallo as I see him turning into a young Carlos Santana type player albeit with a lower OBP. I don’t think he was ever great at it but Santana spent quite a bit of time catching his first several years in the league.

In general, I would not be a fan of the White Sox using their resources to acquire a catching prospect, because at least for the next few years they absolutely have to try Quero out to see if he's their guy. If they acquire Basallo, who gets moved to 1b? They can't both get 3 years to see if they can develop as the starting catcher.

I think this will end up being a very wrong statement.

From what I’ve read, Basallo is likely best served as a backup catcher at the mlb level. A 65/35 split between Quero and Basallo at catcher would be the ideal split if that’s the case.

What do you like about Mayo’s defense?

I think Mayo is gonna mash and would take him for Crochet in a heartbeat, Sox could use 40 bombs because 40 bombs means at least 40 runs and you can’t win without runs 🤔🤔

His defense at 1B should be fine.  You seem to be undervaluing his bat because of strikeouts.

Guy's can improve. That's all I got. Maybe he can stick at 1B.

Fine defense based on what?

Based on scouting reports, videos I’ve seen of him, his athleticism for his size, and the fact he can play a bad, but passable 3B.  Why do you think his defense at 1B would be bad?  You are the first person I have ever seen make that claim.

He sounds a lot like a RF to me.  Has he ever been played out there?  Going back through the MLB reports the last few years on his defense.

Because he was horrific there when they tried him at 1b last summer. Sure, he can improve but the likelihood of him being even as good defensively as Alonso (which isn’t great) is probably best case. So you’re counting on him outhitting Alonso? Reminder, Alonso has been worth 3.3 fWAR/162 games played, which equates to a WAR ~3 per season assuming ~150 games played.

Oh great, another Gavin Sheets situation playing a guy in the OF that has no business being there. At least this one can hit 30 bombs, maybe.

One thing that Sheets doesn't have is any kind of an arm, whatsoever.  I obviously haven't actually seen the kid play at all and am fully going off of the scouting reports, but when  a guy is being talked about as one of the best arms in the game, you think about a position where he can use it.  Based on all of his scouting reports, he sounds like has a decent fallback as a 1b.

I will also note that the samples are incredibly small on fangraphs, but they didn't seem to hate him as a defender.  In 20 innings he played true neutral at 1B and got dinged for range at 3B in 68 innings.  Granted we are talking about 2.5 and 7.5 games here so incredibly SSS to be trying to decide a defensive future based on those numbers.  His UZR/150 of 4.7 at 3B would have qualified him as 6th of 14 qualified players last year in MLB, which puts him solidly in camp average.

He was terrible where?  In his 21 starts for Norfolk or the two starts for BAL?

Gavin Sheets couldn’t hit, if Gavin Sheets could hit he’d be on a major league club right now

Vaughn made 4 errors in 2024 for reference.

Does that put Basallo as a DH most of the time? Because that leaves a lot of the same issues as for bringing in Mayo.

It's weird because the year before he made zero errors in 9 games.  Wonder what was different?

C/1B hence the young Carlos Santana reference

All I know is 6 errors in 20 games for a first baseman is terrible for my daughter’s 12u travel softball team let alone a guy that’s supposed to be mlb ready.

But in previous years he was fine, as well as when he played 1st in BAL,  which usually means something else is going on, like a case of the yips, injury, frustration, or who knows what.
