Austin Slater Signed to MLB Deal

Featured Replies

Guy was brutal first half of last season but was still attractive enough to be traded 2x. He's a useful bench bat, especially if he bounces back to 20-23 form. Sexy? Absolutely not. But decent platoon pairing for Beni in LF and whoever of Fletcher/Colas/Deloach that plays right. I'm assuming it's a pretty cheap 1 year deal, so not much to hand wring about here imo.

This is just so Soto will be able to take a break vs tough lefties.

  • I’m calling the Sox and buying season tickets. This guy checks all the boxes. No power, doesn’t get on base, is over 30. Just what the team needs.

Agreed to and signed are two different,  yet very important, distinctions.

Please explain to me why they are in the context of this discussion

Fedde was officially signed on 12/13/2023.

Yes, which was simply pending a physical for over a week. Terms were agreed to on 12/5. How many starting pitchers were signed before early December last year? If anyone is arguing that Getz wasn’t aggressive in quickly coming to terms and signing Fedde they’re delusional!

My original point was that Getz is a bit too hasty in signing his targeted scrubs that could perhaps be signed later for a minor league deal.  Fedde was signed for 2/$15 and had at least one other suitor (Mets) so he wasn’t in the same category of players that I was referring to.

Because he was just speaking of roster management in terms of leaving spots open for things like the Rule 5 draft which had already taken place by the time they signed Fedde, which literally proves his point.  By agreeing ahead of time, but not signing until the 13th it gave the Sox an extra roster spot to work with during the Winter Meetings and the subsequent Rule 5 draft.

I'm gonna put $5 on him being DFA'd by June.

Is Austin Slater about to produce 10 WAR for the Angels between June and August?

So Getz is…brilliant? I don’t understand the point at all. I’m sure the Sox really needed an extra roster spot in early December lol

And I don’t think that matters. If he waits until February and signs guys that don’t make the team and/or DFAd by June, people are complaining he waited too long to go dumpster diving. I’m too lazy to look it up but I know for a fact at least a handful of posters were saying the Sox overpaid for Fedde too when he was signed.

Yeah I will reiterate what I said earlier and say there’s plenty of fat to trim if the 40-man gets too full.

Charlie Morton, Aaron Nola, Reynaldo Lopez, Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, Kenta Maeda, Luis Severino, Nick Martinez all agreed before Fedde.

That's obvious.

So a grand total of 8 guys? Cool

Dude, 25% of the 40 man was DFA worthy last December and that’s being very generous. But, yea, Getz was super concerned about the 40 man in regards to the timing of the Fedde signing.

For the rule 5 draft? Yeah, kinda. If they don’t need to protect someone, select someone. Or see who gets nontendered. This isn’t a bad player to add, but you could plausibly find a platoon guy with years of control remaining and that alone would be a win.

If you have to go dumpster diving for guys like this, mid December is fine. Mid November is rushing ahead because this is the top guy you want and you will make sacrifices to have him.

Not much to discuss! I was wondering the same thing about the Nicky Lopez clearing waivers thread; I blinked and it was four pages.

That’s about 40% of the starting pitching market, for players notable enough to be listed on ESPNs FA tracker. I say about because I’m not sure if Ohtani counts.

Here’s the thread.

a few people thought he’d flop, a Lot of people liked the gamble. One person wondered if it had to be finalized before the Rule 5 draft because the roster slot wound have value - no it didn’t it seems (cough).

In terms of accurate evaluations I do enjoy my post in there quoting domestic violence enthusiast Chris Getz saying he expected to be better in 2024 than 2023.

Seems like a “wouldn’t be a bad signing if not a Major League contract before Thanksgiving” signing.
Like, this seems like an overly-assertive move, compared to what it is / could be.

Seems like a guy worth taking a flyer on for sure.

But would Slater agree to a minor league deal this early in the offseason? With the White Sox? No chance. The sad and unfortunate state of our team right now is if we like a player like this as a bench piece, we might have to strike this early.

But on the flip side, if the Sox lose out on signing Austin Slater, does it really matter at all?

The only moves that truly matter for this team are the trades of Crochet and Robert and their young players producing.  32-year old Slater will have little to no impact to the Sox next season.

Getz decided to overpay Maldonado on January 5th so I doubt many people would have complained if he held off on some of his dumpster diving signings until February.  🤣
