Sox Trade Cash to Cubs for Matt Thaiss

How is his defense? Looks like he definitely knows how to draw walks.

  • This is the worst move Getz has made, he's awful, everything is terrible.

  • Thaiss had a 100 wRC+ vs RHP last year and he’s really familiar with the coaching staff. It’s fine. Quero and Teel both need more time in AAA

  • Quero has barely played in AAA and Teel has only played 28 games in AAA and was in rookie ball in 2023, so I hope not. Zero reason to rush these guys for the opening day roster.

Baseball Prospectus rated him as the 89th catcher last year in runs saved out of 100. Number 93 was Martin Maldonado. So, upgrade?

He looks about average on the throwing categories and blocking but was one of the worst framers in the game.

Was this international cash or cash considerations?

He’s got a 93 wRC+ against RHP the last three seasons, which is pretty good for a catcher making just above league minimum.  No idea how his defense is or if he’s good working with pitchers.  My guess is those traits must not be good based on his salary and this trade.

Both Thaiss and Robinson are older backup catchers.  Both traded for cash.  Like I said, these guys are a dime a dozen.

You called him a “no bat backstop” and my point was he’s more offense than defense.

He can run into some homers against righties.  Maldonado style, but from the left side.  He still has no bat.

I keep reading that headline and trying to remember Cash, what position he played, and how we fucked up his development.

Except Thaiss is a major leaguer
