Torpedo Bats

I'm not totally convinced they're much better than the alternative, but seems like they wouldn't be the exactly the same either. So...who knows? Hitters need help and this would be a fun innovation to embrace if it gives hitters a few percentage points boost.

So, it’s definitely a different dynamic on the surface of the bat, and im kind of surprised there isn’t a uniform design concept on the barrel of the bat that needs to be adhered to

There was the axe handle that some loved for a while. But the thing that keeps popping into my head when i see these is Hawk's he just missed it, 1/32 of an inch. Well, there's your 1/32 and a little more.

Could be a fad, could just help the confidence, but let's face it, hitters need a little something these days. Maybe this is it.

But didn’t TWTW outweigh or make up for just missing the 1/32 of an inch?

NYY's homer barrage in their opening series might have had more to do with bad Milwaukee pitching than the torpedo bats. If the trend continued against AZ we might be able to gleen some data to suggest the new bats give hitters an advantage, but so far that isn't the case. Five games is far too small of a sample size to draw any conclusions obviously, but I don't think the Yankess have broken the hitting code or anything with a new bat design.

We had the "torpedo" bats back in the 90s, Easton had one. Was supposed to be a training aid to get the barrel through the zone quicker iirc. This is 90% media hype from the NYC market imo. Maybe the bats are slightly better but we're not talking much advantage imo. Some players will not like how they feel I'd imagine and the fad will stall.

Muncy tried it yesterday. Didn’t like it and switched back to his normal bat in his last at bat and hit a game-tying double.

I think the weight reduction is placebo as much as anything and guys just feel they are swinging a quicker bat. I believe I saw that on avg the torpedos are 2 oz lighter than an equivalent traditional bat. Of course there's no free lunch here so if your bat speed isn't up the force equivalent of those couple oz and HR are turning into warning track shots players will go back to what they know.
