“Hi, I’m A.J. Pierzynski,” the former major-league catcher recalled telling Pope Leo XIV.

“Oh, I know who you are. You don’t have to introduce yourself,” the pope replied. [...]

Former White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko previously gifted the pontiff a signed jersey with “Pope Leo” written on the back. The pope also has a bat that once belonged to Hall of Famer Nellie Fox, who spent most of his career with the White Sox, and other memorabilia from Chicago’s pro teams.

His reaction to receiving the ball Pierzynski caught to end Game 1?

“Oh my gosh, he was like, ‘This is unbelievable.’ He was like, ‘No way, this is the ball?’ And he literally said, ‘I was at Game 2, too. But nobody knows that. They didn’t find me.’” [...]

“It was kind of as I was walking away,” Pierzynski said. “I said, ‘Hey, White Sox are in first place.’

“He just looked at me and goes, ‘Oh, I’m watching and paying attention, don’t worry.’ And he just kind of smiled at me.”

I need to become Pope just for the swag and celebs.

We live in a world where the pope could open his phone, see "Ball in play, run(s) scored" and either smile or sigh.

And sounds like he does exactly that.

Let's hope they don't ban divine intervention in the next CBA

Let's face it. This season is a fucking miracle.

After the game Our Chuck and Ozzie showed a clip of Jerry marring Ron Kittle & his girlfriend.

Hasn't he already marred enough?

Look at all that has happened since a Sox fan became Pope:

  • Sox win the MLB draft lottery, get their first 1.1 pick since Harold Baines in '77.

  • Justin Ishbia is announced as the next Sox owner. He meets with the Pope and hints that a new stadium is eventually coming.

  • Colson Montgomery hits 21 HRs in the 2nd half of last season after being called up (44 total over his first 162 games)

  • Sox defy the odds and sign Murakami

  • Sox enter the ASB in a 1st place tie thanks in part to Mune, Colson, and breakout seasons from Vargas, , Peters, and Meidroth. Antonacci and Braden Montgomery look like they're keepers, too.

  • Most analysts believe the Sox had a highly successful MLB draft, and not just because of their 1.1 pick.

That's just stuff I could think of off the top of my head and not a comprehensive list. An amazing turnaround over the last year.

Thought about giving these lyrics the Weird Al treatment to try to make it about the Sox, but I forgot this song kinda sucks and it's probably not worth it haha
