Sox By The Numbers…

Three playoff appearances: 2008, 20, 21

Incompetent ownership…check

Dysfunctional front office…check

Inept players who are retreads, has-been’s and stiffs…check

It’s got to get better someday, I only hope I’m still living to see it.

For anyone who is tempted to think that 3 playoff appearances during this time isn't all that bad, as far as I can tell there are only 2 MLB teams that have had FEWER playoff appearances during this span:  the Mariners and the Marlins.   Unless I'm missing someone, THAT'S IT.   At least the Mariners are ascendant and are likely to make the playoffs this year.

Two other teams, like the Sox, have made the playoffs 3 times since 2007 - the Pirates and Padres.   The Padres have really turned their franchise around beginning around the same time as Rick and Kenny's failed rebuild with all 3 of their playoff appearances being since 2020 and they'll almost certainly will make the playoffs for a 4th time this year.

So, to affirm - Jerry Reinsdorf's team has been REALLY BAD compared to just about every other MLB team over nearly 2 decades and continues to be really bad.  The only other teams I can say that about are the Marlins and Pirates.

And Marlins won two AS in 1997/2003 (first decade as a franchise)...and just forty years in existence, while it took the White Sox 88 years (a lifetime as a fan) to match the same accomplishment.

They did get 1959 in the middle.  Yay?

The White Sox have been around for 125 years and have 3 Championships and 11 playoff appearances. How that is even possible, ill never know.

It's called terrible ownership for various and sundry reasons.

And they didn't have back to back playoff appearances until 2021.  They were the last American League team to do this.  Every expansion team had managed to have back to back playoffs before the Sox.  I'm not sure if any NL team has failed to make the playoffs in back to back seasons.

The Sox were the last of the original pre expansion MLB teams to have made the playoffs in consecutive seasons (and one of those was the COVID year).

Bad ownership has plagued the franchise down through the years. Even though he was cheap Charlie Comiskey was pretty successful in the first 20 years of the franchise  with the Sox winning 4 pennants including 2 WS and should have won a third, they also had 15 years of their first 20 where they finished with a winning record. One has to wonder what would have happened if not for the 1919 Black Sox.

I wonder where the Marlins franchise goes from here.   The A's and Rays have their own debacles, but they'll both likely end up with new ballparks in a few years.  The Marlins already got their shiny new (2012) ballpark and their attendance still has been at the bottom of the league by far for years when not counting the Rays and A's.

Sox historian Rich Lindberg had some interesting thoughts on this. In essence no Black Sox scandal, MLB isn't inclined to institute the 'live ball' to save the sport, Babe Ruth never accomplishes what he did with the Yankees and the Sox team still in one piece and talented, continues to play well...the Yankee dynasty never takes place.

Water always finds its low point.  If Black Sox doesn't happen,  that manifests itself in another way.
