MLBTR Offseason Outlook on White Sox

WestEddy, do you have anything better to do than adding emojis?

Why aren't you out there hyping up the Sox signing a Pacific Rim scout?

Surely they're looking at Kona Takahashi as well?  Whose potential contract looks closer to $30-40 million.

Should the Tigers trade Skubal?

Passan article

"Another rival executive has an informed theory on Harris' (Tigees' GM) focus: "He has his eyes set on 2027 and 2028 as his prime contending years." If things go well in 2026, the window would expand to include it as well. Top prospects Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark, the No. 2 and No. 6 prospects in the sport, could be core players as soon as the second half of 2026, so aiming for things to really take off in 2027 is logical.

Opinions vary on whether Skubal would fetch more this winter or at the deadline because it's hard to project how desperate a contender could hypothetically be at the deadline versus what that team would offer to get an entire season of Skubal plus a first-round pick when he walks. It's safe to assume the return would likely be a bit less at the deadline."

https://global.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47022782/mlb-free-agency-2025-26-tarik-skubal-detroit-tigers-trade-extension-400-million-contract

This pretty much dovetails with the White Sox looking at 2028/29 as their emerging competitive window years...and why you get statements like "at this stage of the rebuild."

Unfortunately, it's likely taking 4 1/2 seasons to reach that uncertain payoff if there aren't sustainable "waves" of minor league talent generated along the way.

Why Imai wants to compete AGAINST the Dodgers and not join them...

29. Ryan O’Hearn, 1B/OF, 32

The first-time All-Star tailed off slightly after a deadline deal sent him from Baltimore to San Diego, but the overall numbers were unavoidably impressive for a guy who was left to rot on the waiver-wire scrap heap just a few years ago. O’Hearn’s peripheral numbers were strong for a third straight season and should secure him a two-year deal with a team in need of a lefty masher. For teams that pass on the upper crust of sluggers such as Alonso, Schwarber and Naylor, O’Hearn will be a perfectly competent consolation prize. He also earns rave reviews for his clubhouse presence, which will only help his case.

Anthony Kay is one of several pitchers with MLB experience who have blossomed overseas recently and could seek a return to the majors this winter. Right-hander Cody Ponce (1.89 ERA in 180 ⅔ innings with 252 strikeouts for the Hanwha Eagles in the Korean Baseball Organization) and left-hander Foster Griffin (2.57 ERA in 315 ⅔ innings for the Yomiuri Giants over the past three seasons) are worth keeping an eye on as well.

In this SoxMachine Spare Parts article are two combined James Fegan radio interviews where he takes question from Bruce Levine and then White Sox Weekly on ESPN 1000. Fegan fields questions about the makeup of the 2026 roster, and when we might see some of the more interesting prospects make their pro debuts.

White Sox: Adolis García, OF
García became a free agent after the Rangers non-tendered him, and although he hasn’t looked like the two-time All-Star who averaged 32 homers, 99 RBIs and a .777 OPS between 2021 and ‘23, García still averaged 22 home runs and 80 RBIs during the past two seasons, albeit with a .675 OPS. García could look to sign a one-year deal in an effort to re-establish his value.

I haven’t given the offseason much thought yet, but I do like the idea of O’Hearn on a two year deal to anchor the middle of the lineup.

  1. Meidroth, 2B
  2. Teel, CA#
  3. O’Hearn, 1B*
  4. Robert, CF
  5. Montgomery, SS*
  6. Vargas, 3B
  7. Benintendi, LF*
  8. Quero, DH#
  9. Baldwin, RF#

Not a terrible lineup if you keep everyone.  Sosa would have to be on the bench and would need to rotate around, but I’d like to see him get a look in LF to see if he can get him more at-bats that way.

No matter how you slice it...Quero might be worth more to other organizations than the White Sox.

He's just not a DH for 60-70% of the at-bats at that position.

Sosa is better suited for that DH spot, all things considered.

O'Hearn will likely play for a contender at this point in his career if the money's the same.  Strong side platoon. Sox certainly won't pay a premium.  Nor should they.  First half 2025 was probably his peak performance.

MLB.com has him to the Nats...whose lineup is much closer to contending at least of Crews can figure things out.

Nationals: Ryan O'Hearn, 1B/OF/DH
Washington has graduated a number of position players through its system over the past two years, but first base remains a need. O’Hearn made his first All-Star team in 2025, hitting 17 home runs with an .803 OPS in 144 games with the Orioles and Padres. The 32-year-old can also play right field, providing versatility to whichever team signs him.

At that point you might as well sign Adolis Garcia to play RF and move Baldwin to a super utility role.

Candidly, I’d try to trade Quero for a major league ready OF prospect of similar value and get Benintendi out of the OF (make him a platoon DH until Jerry is willing to release him).  I’m very much open to adding a decent veteran OF to the mix, but not sure Garcia is the guy I’d target.

Then it's probably guys like Hays Refsnyder Bader W.Castro Yazstremski Mullins, Conforto and Kepler.

Hoskins 1B.

There's your OF Tier B/C.

Kyle Higashioka is a veteran and predictable 1.5ish fWAR backup catcher.

Makes around $6.75 million.

I'm not trading either Jones or Dominguez unless the replacement is a guy who clearly will be the full time guy.  That's not the case here.  That's a huge risk for the veteran Yankees.  Would say the same thing if they were trading for the much more high profile Dalton Rushing.

The Yankees can simply wait until mid season for a guy like this and pretty much just take over the contract instead of giving up a lot of FV potential in the off season.

Ofc it all depends on Yankees' internal scoring evaluation of Quero as a 120+ game catcher.
