According to Will Venable, Colson Montgomery is feeling better after missing Monday’s game with an illness. Venable told MLB.com’s Scott Merkin that Montgomery could play tomorrow.

Venable also told Merkin that he’s yet to decide on an Opening Day starter.

The White Sox face the Reds on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2:05 CT, with Davis Martin scheduled to get the ball in his first outing this Spring.

Venable said shortstop Colson Montgomery, who was out for a second day Tuesday with an unspecified illness, was feeling a little bit better.

“We’’ll see where he’s at [Wednesday],” Venable said.

• There’s no estimate yet on when center fielder Everson Pereira, acquired in an offseason trade with the Rays, will return to game action after experiencing tightness in his right side, Venable said.

“Especially with that side stuff, you just don’t want to mess around and turn it into a longer stint than it needs to be,” he said.

By the way, is anyone not yet sold on Montgomery? The list of players with a half year of good rookie production that don’t quite  pan out on that level is very long. Just saying, I’m surprised he is taken for granted.

True, a half year does not make a career. From what I saw last year was his fielding was damn good, better than I thought. He has excellent power but the thing that he needs is to be is more consistent, he was very streaky. I don’t expect him to be a 40 homer a year guy but 25-30 a year would be about right with 80-90 RBIs and an OPS of .800+. As good as he was last year playing shortstop, I think eventually he winds up at third base.

That back injury scares me more than anything else.  Not really understanding what happened to him last year I HOPE it was injury related, but it was never really explained, so I have no idea if it was more than that or not.

I'm not sure where on the diamond that certain players end up, especially after Chowlowski enters into the mix. My own opinion is that Shortstop and 3b require unique skills and that not every infielder can become proficient at both positions. IMO, Miguel Vargas was the only infielder we had last season that showed us that he can play the hot corner - lightning reflexes coupled with quickness. After Roch comes up, a few infielders might need to show they have the ability to play OF. Not enough starting infield spots for all these players. 

For example, if Baldwin is the starting CFer, where does Acuna play...2B?  or does he even make the 26 man roster.
