Signing Murakami best Sox decision in ages. Very good investment.

I would believe that a lot of Japanese money will be coming into the Sox, much like it happened with Ichiro in Seattle. Good opportunity for JR to cash in on that. Sox brand equity will go up.

ofc they already had the synergy with Nintendo....3-4 hours shorter flight times as well

With JR turning 90 yrs old, wouldn’t he want a championship and spend the money ? He doesn’t need any big money at his age. His children would still inherit the club. IMO.

Was thinking maybe a Japanese TV or radio deal with advertising at Rate park. Sox merchandise selling in Japan. I recall I once attended a Marlins game in Miami, when Ichiro was playing there, and there were many Japanese press and TV and fans there for the game, and Miami is even farther than Chicago. I understand that Ichiro was a legend, but still….

"The Cleveland Guardians remain in first place. The Detroit Tigers remain in first place.

Both teams are 18-19 but that mark is a half game better than the 17-19 White Sox and 17-19 Royals. The 16-20 Twins are just 1.5 games out. These are the saddest sentences I have written in some time.

Cleveland lost in KC last night by a 5-3 score. They didn’t look all that interested, but they were more interested in playing than they were on Monday. Baby steps..."

The Japanese market for Ohtani is larger than the US market. The Dodgers make in excess of $100M in revenue from the media rights and merchandise sales in Japan....on top of their share of television rights all teams share. The Dodgers will make almost a half billion dollars more than Ohtani's 10 year contract.

https://www.japanstadium.com/blog/so-stadium-economics1

The most impactful aspect of Ohtani’s arrival has been the Dodgers' substantial increase in sponsorship revenues, specifically from Japanese corporate giants. New partnerships with UNIQLO (fast fashion), Hello Kitty, Daiso, Yakult (milk/dairy), and ANA (airlines) exemplify how global star power can unlock previously inaccessible revenue streams. This surge in Japanese brand engagement not only diversifies the Dodgers’ revenue base but also strengthens their position in the Pacific Rim as a transnational sports enterprise.

According to SponsorUnited, Ohtani’s marketability alone added approximately $75 million in sponsorships, significantly offsetting the substantial costs of his historic 10-year, $700 million contract.

Sox are the most interesting team in the division from a talent and future perspective right now, IMO, especially now that Skubal is out for a lot of the season and likely won’t be with Detroit after the season is over.

The Dodgers’ average ticket price was $87 last year, which ranked fourth behind the Yankees ($99), Chicago Cubs ($90) and Boston Red Sox ($89), according to MLB’s internal report. But coming off their 2024 World Series, the Dodgers raised 2025 prices and challenged the Yankees for the top spot.

The higher prices are fueled in part by demand triggered by the arrival of Shohei Ohtani for the 2024 season on a then-record 10-year, $700 million contract. Ohtani has also supercharged sponsorships for the club. The Dodgers added a steady stream of new sponsor deals during the 2024 season, including Japanese brands All Nippon Airways, Daiso, Kosé, Kowa, Toyo Tires and Yakult. SponsorUnited estimated it meant $70 million in incremental sponsor revenue.

Basically the White Sox are getting $250-500,000 per game in comparison.

Ohtani's $200 million impact almost equals TOTAL team revenues for Sox A's and Rays/Marlins.

Cleveland has the stockpile of young pitching, DeLauter, Valera, Bazzana...to go with S.Kwan and Jose Ramirez.

At least a one year head start.

The value of shares in the White Sox has soared and will continue to if they continue to outperform expectations and benefit from the revenue streams that Murakami is responsible for.

Jr appears to have one goal in mind now at this stage of his life, maybe...maybe two, in my opinion;

  1. Leaving as much money as humanly possibly for his family when he leaves the scene

  2. One last effort at helping to break the MLBPA in the forthcoming lockout

Not yet ...

Fear of commitment until he finds a more permanent home.

Cubs are drawing just as many if not more Japanese tourism due to team record, Northshore shopping, historic stadium and Imanaga/Suzuki.

Winning 17 out of 20 isn't hurting things either.

War chest is too big this time.

Too much money at stake for both sides to damage the sport like 1994-95 did.

Even the bigger market clubs want to reign in Dodgers Mets Yankees Blue Jays.

Everyone wants to associate with winning teams.

Well, maybe not the Guardians' fans who have been burned by one too many rebuilds/teardowns since the early 00s.

Then this lockout may go on for a very long time since the MLBPA will never agree to a salary cap.

Regarding your second comment never underestimate the stupidity of MLB owners.

They already have 22-24 owners lined up on the (at least soft) cap side.

And the Phils Red Sox Mets Astros cratering does sabotage the "large markets are destroying the game" headlines.

Blue Jays scuffling too.

Northshore shopping? LOL. I never mentioned the Cubs, only the increased valuation of the White Sox which will begin to become apparent as the White Sox continue to become more competitive. You are sounding like you are so far up the Cubs/Joe Ricketts ass that we may never retrieve you. I hope the White Sox take that upcoming series with the cubs. Unless Fedde or Kay is starting we should be able to grab a game or two.

History has shown multiple times owners taking about 'being united' et al.

History also shows what has eventually happened.

But it takes two, to make a deal, and as has been stated recently by the acting director and history a salary cap is a non-starter for the MLBPA.

Anything can happen of course but the union agreeing to one would be jaw dropping.

I'm relatively optimistic about the Sox but I find the Royals to be pretty interesting. Witt looks like he's on track to be an inner circle hall of famer, for one. Maikel Garcia looks like a really nice building block, albeit with some risk that his bat ends up a little more in the average category. Carter Jensen is a really exciting young player even if he hasn't totally proven himself yet. I still have every expectation that Jac Caglianone is going to terrorize the Sox for years. Never trust a pitcher but Cole Ragans is a dude.

I suppose the main downside with that KC organization is that it appears basically all the big talent is already in MLB with no obvious reinforcements on the way from the minors. Some of those young big leaguers they still expect to take steps forward, but if they don't they won't have many fallbacks. So there's a lot of projection going on. They don't seem to have a great foundation for pitching going into the future, but I have a feeling most teams would look like that if you looked very closely.

Ragans has terrible numbers this year and the success rate long term for double TJS surgery pitchers long term isn't all that promising.

Jerry had to be talked into signing him. JR will not sign him long term.
