Hagen stinker in progress

We need some pitching in this system badly

He has no walks through 2 with 5 ks so that is at least progress

Subsequent innings definitely looking better...jumbo shrimp are chasing a lot. He's only thrown 33% of his pitches in the zone which is crazy low. Tells you something about the quality of the stuff but I hope he can zone it up if they make him do it

When he misses, it’s not even close.

I'm noticing that there's a lot of variance in the fastball shape. I don't know if he's trying to throw more than one kind or what. But he's thrown some four seamers with as much as 13" horizontal break and as few as 2". The actual numbers are less important than the difference. How are you supposed to locate if your fastball's movement is that unpredictable? I notice that the armside run is reducing as the game goes on, which I don't have much interpretation of. Just another one of those things that makes me feel like this is a very unfinished product.

Scouts here are better than the A Teamers.

Smith has pitched 4 innings with 1bb and 7K. Gave up a two run HR. Not horrible certainly.

Raining in Charlotte so Hagen likely done. 5ip 4h 2r 2er 1bb 7K so a positive start if not dominate.

It was a team with a lot of MLB quality righties, so I say it was a positive start

Besides the homer, which was very much killed, they didn't make any good contact against him. Seems like he started filling the zone a bit more as the game went on and they weren't quite as chase oriented. Had his usual loss of 1.5mph on the fastball from the first to his final inning (down to 93.4 average). This is a guy who averaged almost 97mph in his first start of the season. Seems like the drop and drive delivery will make everything play up though.

Only 1 walk for Hagen is a good sign.

Velo?

Nvm. He was 95-97/98 his first year, right?

Not sure mid 90s gets it done without complete control of slider or having at least a major league average third pitch.

Still looks like a reliever, albeit with shaky control.

But at least there’s Sandlin and Shane progressing.

Hagen velo ranged 92-96 it looked like. Mostly parked at 94. Not awful, but disappointing.

has it been like that all year or maybe he is trying to gain a little more control?

I seem to remember him throwing harder earlier in the season, but losing velo as the game progressed. He’s been more consistent in the same 92-96 range his last few starts. I’m guessing you’re right and he’s dialed it back.

Don't think anyone had Davis Martin as higher velo and more hit and miss stuff than Schultz and Hagen in 26.

Hopefully, Shane Smith and fingers crossed McDougal can get things together in the second half.

(Still not counting on Adams or Thorpe.)

Variance is a good thing if it's intentional and he's controlling it. I guess that's not the situation. That could get his 94 to play a lot faster.
Otherwise, at 94, he'll be 4th starter a best; maybe a 3 with impeccable command. I supposed 4th starter would be a reasonable "mitigation of damages" at this point.

So we went from Konnor Griffin to a 4th starter.

I try to comfort myself by thinking that we might have picked Jac.
Or, if we had picked Griffin, we may not have picked Bonemer.
Or if he was as good as Chase Burns, as some thought (presumably the Sox), we'd have an ace.
