Look, if the Sox are already looking to put him into a deal like this, it probably means they see something limiting his ceiling at the major league level. If they saw him as a top end catcher, this deal doesn't get traction. Could they be wrong, sure.

B. Smith only concentrated on catching in his last year of college, where he caught 44 games (if memory serves). I think he's got a couple years of starting in the minors before he's regarded as an accomplished catcher.

That's if this is true. Also they're not always right. All that said. If it happens I won't lose any sleep over the trade. All the best prospects would still be intact.

I may have already written this in this thread, but he didn't even call pitchers in that one year of primary catching in college. So he's having to learn that on the fly. When he was talking about pitch calling/sequencing in an interview I heard, he really gave the impression that he knew next to nothing about it. Almost gives an insight into his hitting that he's up there with an empty head just hacking at whatever looks right (might be more gift than curse, TBH)

I don’t know about his pitch selection as a catcher but at the plate, Smith is an incredibly smart hitter with a good plan up there. A 200 WRC+ doesn’t happen by accident.

I don't like to argue with results, I'm just saying to the extent he is smart, I think he appears to be smart by having a very simple plan and relentlessly executing it. Some of the stuff he was saying was basically expressing that he had just come to realize that pitchers are throwing balls out of the zone on purpose to try to get him to swing and therefore he decided to combat that by not swinging at them so much. And then it occurred to him that he should apply that lesson as a catcher.

I think he is showing a really impressive talent for recognizing pitch location...I've tried sort of stress-testing the data to see if there's an inner Lenyn Sosa waiting to come out with two strikes or something, but no. He pretty much makes great swing decisions. But I have a feeling it's because he isn't clouding his mind with a bunch of "this pitcher throws slider low and away 60% of the time on 1-2 counts" kind of stuff.

I'm sure some of them do and for a subset of them, it basically works. I've heard numerous comments to the effect of most major leaguers are guess hitters. If you're gonna guess, you better know the scouting report inside out and backwards. I think the truth is probably a little more complicated, e.g. sometimes guessing, sometimes not, plus the guess isn't 100% selling out for one exact pitch in one exact spot.
