Castillo to Sox for Dominguez, Boston Smith, Nolan Jones per Passan

I'll be curious how history eventually judges the "worst" trade:

Shields for Tatis

or

Castillo for Boston

I'm not. Smith prays every night to have a fraction of the career Tatis has had. It might be the worst trade in franchise history.

Yeah, much better to hear JR for the last 45+ years, minus an aberration. Am I right?

I’ll be honest…I’d have been way more mad if we dealt Bonemer or Carlson for Detmers for this deal.

If you took out Boston Smith, maybe the trade would make some sense. I can’t fathom how taking on a worse contract than the one we gave up required us to give up a legitimate prospect. I don’t even

Boston Smith will have to be a damn good bat to make it worse than the Tatis trade. Don't see that happening. In Hahn's defense, Shields was at least worth 0.7 WAR when they got him. Castillo was worth -0.6 WAR, lol. Don't get me wrong, Shields still sucked when they got him. But Castillo was just plain awful before they acquired him.

Trading Semien and Bassitt for Shark Bait wasn't great either.

The Shields / Tatis Jr. trade will always be worse. Tatis Jr. was six years younger than Boston Smith when he was acquired by the Padres — age 17.

Smith could still be bad but he would literally have to be called up tomorrow and tear it up to even attempt to match the Tatis Jr. trade in badness, and it still wouldn’t be as bad.

Tatis Jr. already had a 3 fWAR season in his rookie season at age 20.

Seranthony did that s%*# with us all the time. He'd blow up, have like 5 or 6 good outings, make you think he's back on track, and then blow up out of nowhere again.

maybe this organization has a false sense of fixing pitchers

How many organizations had five guys within a decade getting legit Top 3-5 Cy votes?

Sale Rodon Crochet Giolito Cease

lol…a bit premature to view Smith as 1/100th of the player of Tatis

Baffling trade at the time that's somehow even worse than I thought. Still like the Doyle deal.

and not one of them is in a Sox uniform

Man let's start to get some value out of that Cease deal. Call up Thorpe!

The biggest problem with this trade is that Getz is going to make sure they keep pitching him. There's no chance they let Venable move him to the bullpen because of what they gave up. This guy is going to continue to lose games for the Sox in the middle of a pennant race. It's actually really hard to make your team worse at the trade deadline when you're BUYING, but Getz did it.

And if we make it to the playoffs, you bet your ass he's gonna start one of those games too. Because he's got playoff experience.

Has to be Fedde now…or Martin.

Think Kay would fit in pretty seamlessly as a long reliever.

There's no way he starts a playoff game with how he's looked. Absolutely no chance.

Like I said, the Sox would be a better team right now if Getz simply made no trades at the deadline instead of the horrific ones he did make. Mason Adams would be in the rotation right now and we would have Hays or Pereira instead of Doyle. Boston Smith in the minors too.

As much as it pains me to say, you’re right. Hopefully they can turn them around and surprise us all again this year / or next year…

They’ve got a chance to prove their worth or take a lesson in humility to cut down some of their pride.

I’ve been hopefully optimistic about Getz’s trades WHILE GRILLING HIM for not getting a second starter… but there isn’t any more room for optimism when it comes to looking at deadline preformance.

Big fat turd.

Poop, even, I dare say.

Well, you and @Chicago White Sox were right that Getz needed to acquire a second starter but he was too worried about only acquiring players with additional year(s) of control instead of rentals.

Mariners fans have little to laugh about this year, but dumping Castillo AND acquiring Smith and Dominguez has been a decent consolation prize.

It was highway robbery.

We thought that with the Kopech trade.

If could be Getz is hoping next season will be better for Castillo

The Sox are in the playoff hunt right now. There is no guarantee that the Sox will be in this same position next season. That’s why the trade already looks terrible. Also, Castillo is only here for one more expensive year. There’s no way to shine this turd of a trade.

Hopefully the player development staff pulls a rabbit out of their asses and shocks us but I have seen enough to write his deadline guys off this year.

And I’ve never wanted to be more wrong in my life. 😆
