Can’t wait for the “actually the royals are going to win the central” phase of the year

John Scriffin will get to that point soon enough.

Great win but what's up with all the riff raff fighting in the stands? Not giving us a good look

Fair.

But it's also true that if you at least can put the ball in play good things can happen. If you have a lot of strike outs, well...nothing can happen except maybe a dropped third strike.

The batting averages of Vargas, Muni and Colson are now .246, .223 and .213 respectively...I mean that's not good at all.

Makes you appreciate even more what guys like Thomas, Konerko, Ordonez, Lee and Valentin did in the early 00's. They hit a ton of home runs and also had good batting averages.

If you put the ball in play it can be a DP. If you K with 1 out you have another hitter to try. Thomas was one of the greatest RHH in baseball history. Sox don't have a guy like that now.

I'd take it more seriously if you were telling me their wRC+ or wOBA was bad instead of their batting avg.

Mostly agree with CaliSox here. Game has just changed. I think batting average without power is kind useless. Some of those hitters Lip listed were great. Thomas in particular was Bonds esque in his ability to take pitches. I loved Valentin but I think that kind of player today isn't worth much. He hit for a low average and didn't get on base. The difference is that both Vargas and Mune have high OBP to go with the pop they provide. Actually think Vargas projects to be a similar profile as Lee but with more walks and more power.

Agree completely, Josh. And what the hell are these idiots fighting about, anyway? I'm guessing it's typically someone's alcohol-fueled perception that he got "disrespected" by someone else?

Sox Machine did a good analysis of the White Sox offense today and why the home run approach isn't a bad thing.

Sox at the top. 6th in baseball overall. Should tell you they have a good approach.

I just don’t like the approach because the 2005 was a bunch of slap hitters, and that helped them win the WS. Wait, they were 5th in baseball with 200 on the season!

As I've posted in the past, the Sox had great balance that season. They could beat you with a blast, a bloop, a bunt or a stolen base.

Also helps when almost everyone in your bullpen has a career year.

Such a common misconception that someone once made a stat just to refute it:

Frustrated by the oft-repeated claim that the 2005 world champion White Sox won because manager Ozzie Guillen was a master of small ball, BP’s Joe Sheehan concocted a stat to capture the club’s true reliance on big-ball tactics: the Guillen Number, which tells us the percentage of a team’s runs that came via the homer. It confirmed that the ’05 Sox, who ranked fourth in the majors that season at 42.4 percent, weren’t limited to the little things.

HRs account for a higher percentage of scoring in the postseason than they do in the regular season, so "live and die by the HR" offenses retain more production than "get 'em over, get 'em in" lineups.

Hitting more HRs than your opponent is one of the stronger win predictors in general, and even more so in October.
