Hitler no, Osama yes

Rep. Tom Cole, Oklahoma Republican, has strong feelings about President Bush's re-election.

In an account published this week in the 7,000-circulation Yukon Review in Oklahoma, Mr. Cole told a group of local Republicans, "What do you think Hitler would have thought if Roosevelt would've lost the election in 1944? He would not have thought American resolve was strengthening. What would the confederacy have thought if Lincoln would have lost the election of 1860?"

Mr. Cole added, "If George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election, it's that simple. It will be interpreted that way by enemies of the United States around the world."

Mr. Cole clarified his remarks in an interview with KTOK radio in Oklahoma City yesterday, saying the Hitler remark was a misquote.

"He admits to saying if the president loses his re-election bid, it will be considered a victory for bin Laden in the eyes of U.S. enemies," KTOK noted in an account yesterday.

"Cole says his references were not meant to be name calling of Democratic presidential candidates. In fact, he says Senator John Kerry is a very patriotic individual," the account stated.

Still, his comments irked Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Robert Matsui of California, who called the remarks "disgraceful and must be repudiated by Republican candidates from President Bush on down the ticket."

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland said yesterday that Mr. Cole "ought to be ashamed of himself" and called for lawmakers to repudiate the remarks "as completely wrong, unacceptable and out of bounds."

But this is not the first Hitler reference of the campaign.

Several weeks ago, the California-based, Democratic activist group MoveOn.org briefly featured a TV spot on its Web site that depicted Mr. Bush as Hitler — an image quickly denounced by Republicans.

Outrageous my ass!

The representative who said that was right on the money. The Islamic world understands now that Bush is a man of action not just words so if he loses the next election then they will percieve that as a sign that our resolve to fight them is fading away. Not that that would bother the leftists around here though.

I also hear that a vote for Kerry is a vote for the Native Americans and France!!

After the election he is giving back Manhattan and overturning the Louisiana Purchase!!!

Ahh...the GOP...playing on only your fears and not your brains.

Maybe Kerry should run for president of France. He'd fit right in over there.

An Al Qaeda offshoot group just recently came out with an endorsement for Bush saying they wanted him to be elected. I saw it on the Toronto Star and Associated Press.

They said that it would be much easier for them to recruit if Bush was in office because, in so many words, Bush is a softheaded tit and his bombing campaigns would make it much easier for recruitment efforts. CrimsonWeltall hit it right on the button.

I must be missing something. What did he say that was outrageous? And what is the Hitler reference that is being talked about? It sounds like the only one being compared to Hitler is bin Laden.

People have to stop being so hypersensitive about Hitler. Hitler is an historical figure that has...gasp...existed. To refer to him as such is not a crime.

A couple of weeks ago when this story broke. After a local Oklahoma paper claimed that U.S. Republican Congressman Tom Cole told a group of GOP faithful that a vote against George W. Bush in 2004 was like voting for Hitler, Cole denied that he ever had said such a thing.

No, Cole indignantly declared through a spokesperson, he didn't compare a vote for Kerry to a vote for Hitler. Cole wanted to set the record straight. What he really had said was that "if George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election."

That's pure spin on the part of that Oklahoma paper.

and this equating voting for Kerry as voting for Osama bin laden, Flash and CChaos and others who take me to task are silent - I guess better to make fun of people for peace than to criticise demogogues. To quote Controlled Chaos: Hypocrite.
