5th starter thread

Out of the options we currently have available to us, who should we go with and why?

IMO we have the following guys as options. In no particular order...

Felix Diaz

Neal Cotts

Jon Rauch

Josh Stewart

Arnie Munoz

Start Cotts again on the same plan as last time...

Let him throw Monday in a "simulated" game and stretch him out a bit and have him ready to throw 60 or so pitches on Saturday.

Just wanted to post this: It's a good read, plus it has the condition on Danny Wright.

Sox Remain High On Cotts

I say go with Rauch, lets try and f*** up another guys confidence.

And if he comes up here and succeeds...? Then we have a solid starter.

Wasn't Rauch rated the number one prospect by BA a few years back? Granted, injuries have come and gone, but he had to do something to earn that pretty high rank. I think Rauch deserves another chance to start...

I say go with Rauch, lets try and f*** up another guys confidence.

Prior to spring training I thought Rauch was going to nail that spot down. I've was wrong, but not by much.

Hear me out here.

Rauch has been pitching well again at AAA --

International League » Charlotte Knights 4/8 to 5/20
W L SV ERA G IP H R ER BB KO HR
5 2 0 3.10 9 49.1 37 19 17 18 39 7

He pitched well there last year.

 International League » Charlotte Knights 04/05 to 08/30 2003
W L SV ERA G IP H R ER BB KO HR
7 1 0 4.11 24 124.2 121 60 57 35 94 16

So the question is, Why isn't he the universal choice to fill the 5th spot?

Here's where it's time to get out the tin foil hats. --- Rauch has not been allowed to work deep into any game this season. He's averaging just over 5 innings per start.

Why isn't he working deeper? --- There's only two logical explinations for why a guy who should be close to the major leagues is being held with such a short leash. 1)There is some sort of underlying injury (Rex has hinted at this) or 2) He is being babied to protect his trade value. He's not the answer at the #5 spot, but maybe he can help get us one through a trade.

The second is my pet conspiracy theory. Maybe the Higer-ups in the White Sox organization have told the guys at Charlotte to pull Rauch late in games to protect his ERA from himself -- They could also be setting hiim up for some Bullpen/long relief stuff, but that's not exactly what I think a minor league player of the year whould bwe used for.

Just my radical theory -- Take it for what it's worth, which probably isn't much.

Well after reading that I guess I have to add Kohlmeir, Grilli, and Adkins into the fifth starter possibilities

Felix Diaz

Neal Cotts

Jon Rauch

Josh Stewart

Arnie Munoz

You know what Oz should do? He should set up a roulette wheel in the clubhouse with those names getting equally sized squares & spin the wheel on the 5th starter's day. Whoever's name comes up gets the nod. It's getting that bad.

I'd say Rauch or Munoz. Whoever would better matchup against Ana[?]. Cotts should be kept in the bullpen. It's not fair to Neal to put him out there when he's not stretched out, or fully prepared to be a SP from the get go.

Another possibility ... Tetsu Yofu.

I think the Sox have room on the 40 man roster (?, not certain), and this guy is a veteran, 30-31 years old, who knows how to pitch.

He's been a starter at Birmingham and just struck out 10 in a start at Charlotte.

Not saying he's the answer, just another name to throw into the mix.

Munoz maybe if he continues to show his stats at AA...Cotts should get another shot...he's capable, I'd love to see Stewart or Rauch but I doubt it will happen...hey, aren't we forgetting Grilli?

What is pathetic is our minor league system sucks. Rauch was injured earlier last year and the sox are truly babying him and protecting his arm. We do not have many choices right now, I think we will try all of them until a trade can be made. A trade will indeed be made, I would suspect sometime in mid june after the rest of our s***ty minor league pitchers suck in there debut.

Ps- I highly suggest with our top eight picks we go for pitchers and infielders. Since we have none of those either.

What is pathetic is our minor league system sucks.

I think mediocre is the word that should be said

Our mediocrity sucks??

One thing is becoming obvious, Guillen likes the bullpen the way it's set up, and he

doesn't want to pull a guy out of there for a spot start, especially with what happened with Cotts Saturday.

He states, and correctly so, someone should be able to come up from the minors and get the job done.

I'm not pushing for Tetsu Yofu or anything, but he throws strikes. He's had very few walks this year and if he strike out 10 guys in 6 innings, he's got to have stuff.

Hey, and Shingo can have someone to talk to!

To me ,you get nowhere being mediocre, and that is pathetic. If you stick to being a C- or D+ than that is what you will be.

Our mediocrity sucks??

Well said.

Jim to me, they can bring that guy up, I don't care eventually they would get around to him anyway. remember Ryan Kohlmeyer came up last year, laid an EGG, We have seen Rauch in the past, He got rocked then injured, Stewart will never be the same and end up a career minor leaguer, Jason Grilli will get a shot before its over and prove the reaon why nobody else wants this guy. Munoz is too green like Diaz, Honel is injured, and wing or meaux is injured. Funny everyone in our system has injuries. So yea lets bring up your buddy s*** at least his arm isn't dangling. Looking forward to the trade. I have an extra for thursday, you want in?

Thursday ... sure, why not. Much appreciated, what are the odds of gettin' you to try one of the other fine Bridgeport establishments? :D

Yofu or no Yofu, I still think there will be a trade ... but not for a while.

Not enough teams are out of it yet, and there is the ever present issue of taking on salary with our beloved.

I just hope it's not some bottom feeder guy. There's no reason they shouldn't go for a higher end guy.

1. Call up Rauch-mon

2. Have Cotts back him up. Different styles might give hitters additional problems

3. In the meantime, look for a Freddy Garcia type. Then pray, an ace pitcher could be had around the July 30th deadline.

s***...I'll pitch...those Anaheim b****es ain't ready for my 30 mph change.

rauch or kohlmeyer i say give kohlmeyer another chance
