Dick Allen Posted September 10, 2004 Share Posted September 10, 2004 The White Sox were one of seven or eight teams that attended a workout wherever he is staying. The NY papers say he wants a lot of money and don't think the Yankees have much interest. He is apparently very slow, and probably a firstbaseman/DH kind of guy. He also is very rusty. He hasn't played in a couple of years. He basically was kicked off the team because of the fear of defection. But while the 21-year-old switch hitter figures to be chased by the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets, among others, he could be more of a project that advertised. "This guy is not an immediate major-league player," said one scout who attended the workout. "He really hasn't played in a couple of years (after being suspended from the Cuban national team over fears he would defect). So it's going to take a lot of time, a lot of at-bats." The scout's lukewarm review of Morales' skills: "Can't run at all. Pretty good stroke. Good kid. Good approach to hitting. Has to play first base.
