I'm not sure if the sox want to go the stop gap route, but if they did larken would look great.

If we're going to get a stop gap I would prefer Vizquel.

IMO, Larkin is gonna retire, and should.

No chance in hell... this guy is over the hill, I don't even want him as a back up/bench player

He has said he will play next year no matter where.

He has said he will play next year no matter where.

First of all, this is in my opinion. Secondly, he said he's gonna keep his options open. We dunno if he'll be back or not. Barry Larkin himself doesn't know.

Larkin isn't sure whether his career is over. He hasn't decided whether to try to play one more season with another team, ending his career in a different uniform.

``I have to see what opportunities present themselves, if there's anything that makes sense,'' he said.

Doesn't sound like a sure man to me.

Don't want Larkin offers nothing we need

well right, but i'm sayin... look at his stats this last year... they're HELLAZ better than Jose and though his power isnt as good as Uribe his OBP was pretty good and as far as stop gaps go wouldnt be HORRIBLE. Plus he really is a proven vet with clubhouse power. I'm not advocating getting him, i'm not even sure if i'd want him. Af this point he's just another option that looks interesting.

I know it was your opinion i was just saying was i heard and what i have read. Every place also believes he will continue his career.

Barry Larkin made it official Sunday: He is planning to come back and play in 2005.

"There's a week to go in the season," he said. "I want teams to go into the offseason knowing that I plan to play."

Larkin's announcement came a day after Reds chief operating officer John Allen was quoted in the Enquirer saying the club was waiting for a decision from Larkin on whether he was retiring or not before addressing Larkin's future.

"When teams make their offseason plans, I don't want them to see any indecisiveness or indecision or my part," Larkin said. "I want to play. Whether that happens or not and what role I'm offered remains to be seen."

While Larkin kept saying "teams," he reiterated that his first choice is to return for a 20th season with the Reds.

General manager Dan O'Brien said Sunday what he's said all along: The Reds will address Larkin and their other free agents after the season.

While the Reds won't comment on Larkin's future, everything they've done would seem to say he's not in their plans. They are looking at Felipe Lopez and Anderson Machado to fill the shortstop role.

If the Reds don't offer Larkin a contract, he'll pursue free agency. If no other teams are interested, he'll retire.

"My intention is to play," he said. "If there are no offers . . . I'll accept that."

Larkin knows there's a possibility that no offers to play shortstop every day will come.

He turns 41 April 28. He's been limited by injuries in recent years. He played 45 games in 2001 and 70 last year. He hasn't been on the disabled list this year but an abdominal strain and an oblique strain forced him to miss time.

He said he might be willing to accept a utility role.

"It depends on what that means," he said. "If I'm going to play other positions, I have to train for that in the offseason."

Larkin has played all but three games in his career at shortstop.

He doesn't even look interesting.

Unless someone hit rewind button the time machine button again and it's 1995.

yeah you guys are prolly right, i'm looking at it more closely now and his stats were decent last year but he only had like 340 some at bats so it's hard to base a full season off that. anyway yeah... just thought i'd throw it out there... lol

i just dont see why everyone is ripping on larkin but they all love vizquel....

I still love Jose Valentin. Not in that way mind you...

I like people who have something to prove and Jose does. He is a good fit on this team.

Failing that though I would like Vizquel before Barry Larkin.

Larkin is also too injury prone to really have on this team.

NO GRACIAS !

Vizquel proved this year that he still has something to offer a team. Larkin, like Robbie Alomar, appears to be done.

Just say no to drugs.

And just say no to Barry Larkin.

You do that, and you'll be okay until you burn another fattie.

:bang

I don't really want Larkin, but it's not a bizarre idea. Between Vizquel and Larkin, Vizquel has an advantage in durability, speed, fielding, bunting (? -- maybe, not sure if Larkin's few sacs are due to ability or team philosophy), and hitting lhp. But Larkin may well have 2-3 million advantages, himself, along with a more consistent overall obp (though there is the one awful year in 2002). If we are thinking of a stopgap ss, there are much worse ideas than taking the very small risk of signing Larkin. But I'd still prefer a younger player.

I think the Sox will go after Visquel before Larkin.
