Sosa Traded

Featured Replies

According to WGN Radio right now the deal is pretty much done.

Prospects and Jerry Heirston (Sp?) for Sammy Sosa

If this deal is for real and done then Baltimore is the worst franchise in baseball.

I heard it on the Score, Hairston and Prospects doesn't seem like much to me.

This is actually a good deal for both sides. The Cubs get some addition by subtraction in the clubhouse and get to free up money for a Magglio run if they choose. The Orioles quiet a frustrated fansbase with a guy who may draw tickets. Let's face it, he's overrated and a world-class jerk none of us like but I can see some value in adding him if I am Baltimore. It's not like he's hitting .220 with no power. He should still hit 40 if he can make 150 games. By the small amount that the Flubs are getting, I would assume Baltimore is picking up most of the tab.

There's a lot of rumors going around right now, nothing official though.

Sounds like if something does go down it won't be till Monday.

the deal isnt done yet but i heard Jorge Julio might be involved in the deal as well. Id assume for this to go down the cubs are paying a major part of Sosa's contract. I think he will bounce back in Baltimore really surrounded by good hitters and not have cub fans all over him.

Hendry has stated that he won't just pay the whole 16. Maybe if he gets Julio (who they could use) he will move a bit on that. THe more the Cubs get, the more of the tab they will have to pay.

I think the fact that this came from the World's Greatest Newspaper adds weight to it. ESPNews has picked it up in the bottom corner.

They are saying Jorge is not part of the deal. Its Sosa for Hariston Jr and two minor league prospects.

Per Rotoworld:

Several sources told the AP that Sammy Sosa will be traded to the Orioles, with the Cubs paying a substantial portion of the $17 million he's owed this season.

Sosa reportedly would waive his no-trade clause and agree to void his salary in 2006. That makes it sound as if a contract extension won't be part of the deal. The Cubs will definitely get Jerry Hairston Jr. and prospects. Jorge Julio may or may not be involved

well if cubs make out with Julio and Hairston JR and unload Sosa id say they didnt do 2 bad of a job. I just like to know how much of Sosa's contract they would have to eat.

According to rotoworld, it would be a substantial portion maybe 10$ out of $17, just a guess.

If the cubs dont get Maggs, what's their outfield going to be....C Pat (Sosa Jr.), Hollandsworth? and.....?

Dubois/Burnitz.

I predict this won't get done for another couple weeks, and the names involved will change several times

Dubois/Burnitz.

Are you saying if and when they sign burnitz?

I'm actually surprised the trade went through even though we've been hearing Sosa could be moved. Good trade for both teams though. Baltimore doesn't want to keel over for Boston and New York.

They'll continue to be b**** slapped by Yankees and Red Sox. Listening to Mike Murphy driving home from school, Angelos promised Orioles fans a "revamped team." and it appears he was willing to tango with Hendry.

Sosa has feasted off weak NLC pitching for nearly his entire career, how can Angelos expect him to perform consistently against New York/Boston? If the structuring of the deal is correct (06 voided), I'm afraid Baltimore will be put in a similar situation as the Mets were with Chris Benson. Overpay for Sosa, and risk scewing the upcoming market for power hitters. All we need is Konerko demanding >10 million because Baltimore lavished Sosa with a 45/3 deal.

I'm upset that he's being traded. But only because he causes such a problem within their clubhouse. Jerry Hairston, Jr.? Isn't he a second baseman? Where the hell is he going to fit. If you ask me, Baltimore got a steal.

I know it's been said somewhere, but the offense wasn't even Baltimore's problem. This does nothing but hurt them, even if Sosa exceeds expectations.

Baltimore's Rotation as of this moment;

1 - Sidney Ponson

2 - Rodrigo Lopez

3 - Daniel Cabrera

4 - Erik Bedard

5 - Matt Riley

Is there 1 guy on that list who would get into our rotation at the moment?

Maybe Ponson, but he's not even that special and his contract would make it worse.

I wouldn't mind Rodrigo Lopez. He is a stud in the making.

It seems Baltimore is attempting to compensate their ineptness with a headline grabbing move. Isn't that what teams are fighting for today, media coverage? :rolly

Ponson is their ace. Cabrera (unless I've misplaced another starter) is their number 2. Outside of these starters, which is hardly proven or formidable, strong American League clubs will rip through their rotation. Their bullpen may sustain some leads, but again, mediocrity won't cut it in the ALE. Not against two clubs running payrolls exceeding 120 million.
