Sox have Korean Pitcher try out

Featured Replies

I was watching Comcast and they mentioned that the Sox were trying a out a 23-year old Korean pitcher who throws in the low to mid 90's, and as high as 97. They said he was comparable to a healthy Chan Ho Park. Anyone know any more about this, maybe the guys name?

First I've heard about it, I'll have a browse around to see if there's any news.

The ST photo thread has images...

There's a pic of him in the spring training thread.

Ahhh my bad. :bang

If he is anything like Chan-Ho before his injuries, you sign him and you sign him quickly.

Even if he doesn't pan out, a minor leauge contract isn't going to bury you.

Best case scenario: he impresses in the minors and can contribute at the major league level.

Worst case scenario: some very nice PR, but ultimately, you lose the gamble and have to eat a minor league contract.

Roll the dice.

Definitely worth the risk. Since he's been on military service for 4 years, he won't have much wear and tear on his arm at the moment, which can only be a good thing. Good to see the Sox thinking outside the box, and the Asian connection working again for them.

Korean born pitcher Sang-Ho Moon had a brief tryout for the Sox on Tuesday, throwing around 95 miles per hour, sporting a fastball, splitter and a slider. No decision was made.

my dreams of the orient express bullpen are coming closer to fruition by the day!

95? If the splitter and slider are decent this guy is bullpen material.

From whitesox.com:

Foreign arms: Sang Ho Moon, a free agent pitcher from Korea, had an open tryout with the White Sox during workouts Tuesday. Sporting red shoes and long reddish-brown hair, the hard-throwing right-hander had a bullpen session in front of Williams, Guillen, pitching coach Don Cooper and a handful of White Sox scouts.

Moon threw to Man Soo Lee, the White Sox bullpen catcher, who is considered a Korean baseball legend. Although the 23-year-old Moon was a bit wild, with two early pitches sailing over Lee's head and getting stuck in the chain-link support fence, he was able to throw the ball in the low-to-mid-90s. He also featured a split-finger and slider, according to Lee.

No decision had been made as of Tuesday afternoon on whether the White Sox would sign him to a minor league contract.

Why is there no information about him any where? Did he go by a different name before or is it because he has been out of baseball for four years?

He's only 23.

He can be a project.

Sign him to AAA or AA or something.

One thing to remember about a guy who hasn't thrown in four years (at least competitively) is that you can't get many innings out fo him. Otherwise you get shoeney disease

ink him never can have enough good arms..

Thats great he can throw 95ish.. whats his control look like?

Who cares? I do not think we would be expecting anything out of him for a year or two anyway.

Maybe we are just trying to gain popularity overseas for the big time players that will be coming over.

Speaking of Asian players what's up with Yofu? Is he still in our system?

Daisuke matsuzaka please. :)

Sign him to a minor league deal. More arms wont hurt. He looks crazy too.

Seems like a worthwhile minor league investment. Obviosly he's a project, but he's got a good arm and this is after not pitching in a couple years.

He flew the catcher a couple of times, but that is hard to say if that is a result of not pitching for 4 years, or that's the way he throws. He is worth a minor league contract and extended spring training if nothing else.

THanks SS, I agree ink him throw him to double-a and see what he does down there,

If they sign this guy chances are great he'd be in extended spring training, and then start at a lower level with the goal of maybe ending up at AA later in the year.

He hasn't pitched competitively for 4 years. Double A is a major stretch.

This is nothing more than the Sox trying to bring guys in for as cheap as possible.

Kenny: Hey should I go find some real bullpen help?

JR: Nope, Just bring over some more of them there Asians, the fans eat it up!

23 awesome stuff and people aren't bidding over him? This is crap. Don't get your hopes up for this guy.
