Exactly. As a first move, I don't mind it. As the only move, horrible and dissapointing.

Well, that pretty much sums it up to me.

They've got to be just looking at the numbers.

Explain it to them this way, Zach Day = Kirk Saarloos

Exactly Cheat... or maybe its just that everyone is spoiled by the likes of Buehrle, Garland, Garcia.

Maybe that is true. Maybe we ARE spoiled by having 3 phenominal starters. Is this the coming of the next Big 3 for years to come? With a combing like 32 wins and a low ERA, this staff is set right? No. Contreras and whoever the 5th starter are have not been getting it done. Contrerads pitched well in his last start but he is ery inconsistent and we need an innings eater at the end of the rotation to be able to save the bullpen.

He's better than Saarloos, imo. Those that are just looking at numbers are dead wrong on Zach Day, when the kid is healthy he can pitch and he's a much better option this year than Brandon McCarthy.

I think this would be a very good move assuming the Sox aren't giving up anything too grand. The only thing is I can't see the Sox throwing cash into this deal because thats not there MO.

This would be a good move because it gives the Sox a much needed insurance option (plus when healthy he's a good pitcher) not to mention he could also be packaged up with a good prospect for something else.

Has there been any chicago reports about this trade

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 11:15 AM)
Trading for an average at best pitcher coming of the DL? This doesn't make any sense and then on top of that giving up prospects? I hope not!

Average at best?

Age 24 - ERA+ = 115

Age 25 - ERA+ = 119

Age 26 - ERA+ = 105

Seems to me he's been nothing but above average, not to mention very young, and very cheap. f*** sending him elsewhere. I've admired him as a pitcher and watched his starts for awhile now, so I'm a little jaded on this issue.

If this happens, who's to say there won't be another move?

He would make a nice 5th starter for next year. :P

Day has had 2 starts in AAA since his injury, he's 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA, 7 K's and 1 BB. Here's a good piece on him;

All Baseball -

Zach Day

Age 27 (turned 27 in middle of June)

2005 stats: 6.75 ERA, 1.83 WHIP, 25 BB, 16 K in 36 innings

His first two half-years in the majors, Zach was perfectly acceptable as a back of the rotation starter. About a hit an inning and low HR numbers equals an acceptable ERA. The knock on him was that he always walked too many and struck out too few. He did make very minor progress from 2003 to 2004 but has seemed to regress this year and now he’s injured. Projects to the back of the rotation, 4th or 5th starter.

He's better than Saarloos, imo.  Those that are just looking at numbers are dead wrong on Zach Day, when the kid is healthy he can pitch and he's a much better option this year than Brandon McCarthy.

Jason, excellent points, could not have stated it better. Right now Day is out on a rehab assignment but he's a guy who pitched with some really bad Montreal teams behind him. I've always liked his arm, watched him throw vs. the Cubs and he knows what he's doing. Plus, he's versatile and could be a key piece for the future too.

It's all about this year at the moment. Every move that's made, the question is does it provide depth, are we making the major league team better? I think this guy would be excellent depth.

Living here in SF I know that Brian Sabean try to get Zach Day at the beginnig of the year.

So maybe we are close to getting Jason Schmidt..

Willie Harris and Joe Borchard would look good. Zach Day can pitch.

Stat - Hernandez is 7-2. This makes him a top pitcher in the AL as far as win % goes. He is not a top pitcher in reality though.

Borchard is out of options and red hot. They lose him for nothing if he does not stick at the ML level next year. He could be a monster in Colorado. Harris can play OF (speed) or second/short for them.

You could also look at this another way. Sox could keep Zach Day as the 5th starter, allowing them to package one of Cont or Duque and some prospects to another team for a pitcher and than be able to lock up said pitcher to a long term deal (ie AJ Burnett).

You give up a guy like Duque, and two good prospects and a mid-level for Burnett. Sox than insert Day into the 5th spot (they still have Bmac as the potential 6th guy cause he's the one guy you don't ever offer...also who knows if Florida would accept) and than you now free up 4.5 million or so that Duque was set to make, meaning that you only really increase payroll by 5.5 million and offer AJ 10 mill a year.

They could also do this to acquire another player who may have a higher salary. Just throwing it out there.

I think the fragile psyche of Count and Duque make them fixtures in some regard. I also do not think a team will take on their salary. I get the feeling the Yanks are paying a good chunck of Count's salary which keeps him cheap for us.

Sox are paying roughly 6 mill a year for Cont. It may even be 7, I forget exactly, but its far from cheap. Of course if Jose pitches like he did early in the year it would be well worth it.

I'm all for this idea.

Zach Day would be a very nice pickup..

I bet a package of Zach Day and B-Mac can get something pretty good in return.

Or a package of Contreras, Day and $1,000,000 would get Schmidt or Burnett.

El Duque will probably be the one to stay from the Cuban duo because of Dookies playoff experience and success.

Also the fact I think it helps Contreras to have El Duque here more than it helps El Duque to have Contreras.

IIRC, you unearthed some other Sox/SF rumors, so I'm going to take your word on this one.

We could be getting close, like it or not, folks.

I will welcome Day to the rotation. He is young and Coop might help him.

Well, they were saying ealrier in the week that a trade might be close. But wit hall these different rumors, it might just be a smokescreen. But, for some strange reason, if the 3-way was to go thru, I just get the feeling that KW would keep Day. I dont't know why.

It's funny to read this thread from beginning to end. It went from the whole first page of people saying, "No way, this is a terrible idea," to people liking the trade.

I'm all for the trade. I'd prefer to package Day with someone else and make a bigger trade, but I also wouldn't mind keeping him as a swingman or 5th starter.

I believe that the Day trade would be a trade that KW will make to help satisfy SF's interest in two ML ready SPs for Schmidt.

But, that saying...

If Day pitches well for the Sox, KW might not deal him.

I agree for the most part. I think it's almost certain that he'd turn around and trade him, though he just might keep him.
