I happen to think that the greatest songwriters of all- time are Jim Morrison/Ray Manzarek/Bobby Kreiger of The Doors (Dylan would be a close second). I just saw a concert today with Manzarek and Kreiger and it was awesome. I always liked The Doors music, but know I love it. They put on a hell of a show.

My bias is getting ridiculous, I no longer make sense.

Barry Manilow is talented. (he really is)

I'd say McCartney would be my personal #1.

Hey palesox38...did you go to the concert that was held at st. rita? Manzarek is a proud alum as am I.

Anyone who would argue against John Lennon/Paul McCartney is an idiot.

Honestly, I would have just voted for either one of them alone, but to put them together... there is no comparison. Johnny and Paully... amazing. :cheers

PS, George Harrison put together 2 of the best Beatles songs ever written.... "Something" + "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."

Eddie Van Halen. Period. :nono

I even disregarded their solo stuff before picking Lennon and McCartney. Something for everyone.

Lennon/McCartney [/thread]

LOL

I was thinking we should let it be, before we have to drop a silver hammer on some people's heads, there is something in the way that Lennon/McCartney wrote that makes them #1. I don't wish to light someone's fire here, but the answer isn't blowing in the wind.

Jim, SS, care to add?

We've taken a long and winding road through all these songwriters, but when you are talking about the best you always have to get back to Lennon-McCartney. Though it's been longer than thirty years ago, today, you just have to let it be.

Where's the Billy Ocean option?

Seriously though, what about Frank Zappa or David Bowie?

Lennon/McCartney--but Boby Dylan give me reason to pause saying that.

Judging by the choices, I think the thread should be titled "Greatest rock songwriter of All-Time." They are all extremely talented, but IMO the greatest songwriter of all time is Cole Porter.

Shouldn't the Elton John choice really be Elton John/Bernie Taupin?

Too easy...Lennon/McCartney....so many good songs...

Most people don't realize that Elton primarily wrote the music. IIRC from an interview with him, I don't believe any lyrics were his.

Was Neil Diamond a songwriter?

If I learned one thing from my English teacher in senior year, it's that Jim Morrison is the greatest song writer ever. You'd be hard-pressed not to find a deeper meaning in any lyric he ever wrote. Oh, and Ray Manzarek went to my HS.:)

So many Beatlephiles here.

I personally have to go with Billy Joel. I thought he was going to have to be a write in when I read the subject, but to my surprise he was an option.

Bottoms up Billy!! :drink
