I was talking about in general. It's too bad we're not the Cubs and the Royals are the Pirates, or else they'd give us Sweeney for someone like Borchard and Honel. We need a number 3 hitter worse than we do a leadoff hitter.

But Carl Everett was on pace for 30 HR/100 RBI during the first month of the season, and really, how many #3 hitters can say that?

Now why did Aurilia make it through waivers? He's having a decent year, and b/c he signed a minor league deal, I'd think he'd be dirt cheap.

Dunno. He's played a handful of games there this year, but I don't know if he's any good.

 

I'm not trying to be an advocate for Aurilia, and he won't be coming here if he passed waivers. It just seems like a 'why not?' proposition, if you only have to pay him $100k or so for the remainder of the season. I'm surprised nobody picked him up. The Twins took a shot at Boone, why not Aurilia?

Can someone please tell me why we are not putting in claims for guys like dmitri young, mike sweeney, hell even alfonso or griffey?

 

The only reason I can think of is that they would rather have these guys pass thru waivers and try to work out a deal and not take on the entire contracts of the above guys.

 

Is this acceptable this season? It's been obvious the entire year that the offensive help was needed. If we are not adding guys because of $$ concerns than that really pisses me off considering the chance we have this year.

If you put in a claim for a player, that team may choose to pull back the player off waivers making him ineligable to be traded, the team may also send that player and his whole contract to that team or the team who put him on waivers and the team that claimed him would have a specified amount of time to work out a deal for the player. Seeing how we're the last team in the majors in waiver claims (unless the claim comes from the AL) you might as well just let him clear waivers and try to work out a trade for him.

You also have the effect that if you do that, other teams may not let your players clear waivers and therefore hamstring your ability to make trades. There is a gentleman's agreement out there and if you break it, like Steve Phillips did as Mets GM, then you'll have to pay the piper.

Dmitri Young is no better than Carl Everett. Look at their respective stats. Alfonso Soriano was already blocked by the Twins when they claimed him. He cannot be traded now. Griffey and Sweeney have both cleared waivers and can be traded now. I agree with you though. If Reinsdorf and company were serious about winning this thing, they would be trying their hardest to obtain Griffey. The Sox have had record attendance this season and a record number of sellouts. Where is all this extra money going? To Geoff Blum?

Let's keep in mind no other team has stepped up to the plate for KGJ & Sweeney either. If that happens then sure JR should be blamed for not spending the $$. But until then I can't really blame him. As much as he wants to win next year he has to consider future years as well.

 

Picking up any one of those contracts might mean having to let go of a starter. For a team built on pitching & defense that's the last thing you want to do. That's why the best strategy is keep the rotation intact for as long as you can & deal the chips to upgrade the offense. KW tried to do that but the Reds owner wasnt impressed with the chips being offered.

 

KC would never trade Sweeney to the White Sox. You don't trade your best marquee player to a major rival.

Sweeney probably won't be traded to the White Sox because of the contract, but I don't believe that teams with such low payrolls - like the Royals - would NOT trade with the White Sox if they could work things out.

 

The Pirates have made it a tradition.

I could see the PR hitting the Tigers with Young. Especially w the Maggs fiasco. Not a chance.

The Tigers would definitely trade Young IMO. He's just your average 1B. Average #'s for a power spot like 1B. They have Shelton there now. They have Inge, Guillen, Polanco, and Irod as their other infielders. Monroe's having a good year for them. Maggs of course will be their RF. They have two outfielders for the other two positions... the speedy Logan and one of the highest rated prospects in all of baseball, Curtis Granderson. White's on the DL too, otherwise you'd have to factor him in as well. Young is very expendable. If they can get good prospects for him from anybody, they'd do it. He's not going to be THAT much of a help.
