I wanted to address this before the new season started seeing as there are going to be a lot of reasons to cheer for the sox this season.

During the world series last year I was extremely disappointed to find that in game 1 and game 2 there were heated verbal disputes (that lasted for innings) between groups of white sox fans because some fans wanted to stand and cheer and some fans seated behind them wanted to sit.

I think that in pretty much any circumstance (especially the world series) if people want to stand and cheer they should not be yelled at to sit down because of their enthusiasm (unless they are from the other team). Do people disagree?

It really depends. If you are up cheering on the sox, then thats fine, but when groups of people stand for innings at a time just talking and not even watching the game, now that is bogus. I personally try not to stand in someones way unless it is a big part of the game, because I wouldnt want people in my way during the game.

standing to stand I think is totally inappropriate, but standing to actively cheer in a critical situation I think is okay

Seriously, if a big play is happening stand up and cheer, no doubt, but don't stand at random times like some people do, it gets annoying as hell.

Sit down and watch until something happens that makes you want to stand and cheer.

Rule #2: Don't come back to your seat in the middle of the game.

 

I think it's OK to stand after a great play...however i think it's also fine to stand when the pitcher has 2 outs, 2 strikes, and getting out of a jam, etc. Not necessarily always AFTER something happens.

Yeah, I remember the Cubs/Sox game with Shingo vs Sosa.

I always stand on the concourse so nobody complains about me being in their way.

Its just iggnorant to stand in front of peoples view for no real reason, and when play is being played.

Someone should dig up that huge thread we had about fan etiquette a while back. Fantastic discussion.

How do you define a 'pause' in play at a baseball game? Is the time between pitches considered a pause? If I'm sitting in the middle of an aisle and I have to get up to go drain, I could decide to start moving between pitches, but I'll probably still be trying to make my way out of that aisle during the next pitch or two. So, I'll still be blocking someone's view.

Standing when everyone else is sitting is just wrong.

You should sit the you know what down during game action. If you have to get up to go to the bathroom or something, that's cool. Besides that, sit your ass down.

No. Between batters/innings, where you can get out without causing someone to miss actual action.

This is a matter of common sense and common courtesy. However, both are becoming more uncommon every day.

In general I subscribe to hockey etiquette rules because they just work well. Wait until a desernable pause in play so that you don't disturb the viewing pleasure of the fans around you. Wait until their is a switch in batters and/or innings before making anyone get out of their seat.

 

Now as for the much more heated when to stand and cheer arguements. I always side with the people who want to get cheers going. I totally believe in the whole lets get the crowd and team fired up stuff. If the team looks flat and needs a boost, or if you realize this could be a critical junction in the game, by all means stand and cheer. I hate the people who complain about people wanting to stand and cheer at a professional sporting event. This isn't the damned opera or symphony we are talking about where something subtle could be missed by the extra noise. This is baseball we are talking about. I paid a lot of money to enjoy this, and if I think we as a crowd can help the team, or hurt the other team, then I am damned well going to do it. If you want to sit on your hands, feel free. This isn't ain't the subway, this ain't the opera, and when its time to get the team going, its time to get the team going.
