Guillen tells Frank to be quiet and play

TUCSON, Ariz. — Ozzie Guillen had done his best to stay out of the Frank Thomas-Ken Williams feud, but the White Sox manager made it obvious Tuesday whose corner he's in.

"As a friend, Frank better shut the (bleep) up because he's going to put himself in a big position where he's going to be embarrassed," Guillen said. "Move on and get the home runs you need to hit the Hall of Fame and be on the first ballot.

"When you are that good, you don't need to talk that way about anybody or anything. Frank is the greatest player to wear this uniform. Leave with that image."

Guillen quickly pointed out that he understood Thomas' feelings about leaving the team after spending his whole career in a Sox uniform, and admitted that he was guilty of taking shots at the organization when he felt he was forced out back in 1997.

"That happened to me," Guillen said. "I was talking crap about the White Sox, but I just said it once. That's it. I got it off of my chest. If you hear it day in and day out, people get aggravated about it."

As far as Williams, the sixth-year GM was done talking about the topic. He and Thomas talked on the phone Sunday night, and Williams once again warned the designated hitter to concentrate on his new team in Oakland, and stop talking about "White Sox business."

"To me, Kenny had enough from Frank," Guillen said. "That's my opinion, and I'm not getting on Frank's case. But Kenny handled it the way he should.

"I think Kenny did it the right way. He put his point across to show how we deal with this problem for a long time. It's not just a one-day deal. This deal has been since whatever.

"The situation is I don't think Kenny cares about talking about Ozzie Guillen or Kenny Williams. But when you talk about (board chairman) Jerry Reinsdorf or the White Sox, (Williams) gets real sensitive about it.

The Sox and Athletics meet each other twice in Cactus League play, but Thomas is not expected to play in either of those games. The first regular-season meeting is May 22, as Oakland travels to the South Side.

Guillen said he would have no problem shaking Thomas' hand and talking to him.

"You are not part of us anymore," Guillen said of Thomas. "We don't worry about you. Go out and play your game, put your numbers that you want to put, be a Hall of Famer. I respect that. But when you keep plugging in and plugging in and plugging in, all of a sudden people get tired."

Didn't Ozzie say he was gonna stay out of it?

Didnt Ozzie say he was going to retire after he won the world series? ;)

How many times has Ozzie or Kenny said something, only to go back on it? Everytime we have a "Didnt Ozzie/Kenny say....." thread. LOL. I have pretty much stopped listening to them, I just watch the results.

True. I did really think that because Frank hasn't said a word about Ozzie in months that he actually would stay out of it. Silly me.

What? Did Ozzie hurt your feelings now too? He didn't say anything bad or anything that wasn't true. He was pretty honest. Who cares if he got involved?

You wake up on the wrong side of the bed this morning... :huh

I don't care one way or the other. But he did say that since his name wasn't mentioned, he was gonna stay out of it.

"As a friend, Frank better shut the (bleep) up because he's going to put himself in a big position where he's going to be embarrassed," Guillen said.

This doesn't qualify as "staying out of it."
