I have no idea if the info on the first post is true, but if it is I wouldn't be surprised. With teams always looking for bullpen help, if it was a pretty sure thing Nelson could be an effective reliever he probably wouldn't have been broadcasting in Seattle.

Well, Nelson pitched one inning today. Gave up a hit, no walks, and two strikeouts.

9 of his 12 pitches were strikes today, for what that's worth.

 

He's almost 40 so I doubt he'll ever have the high 90's velocity again but the key is, can he get major league hitters out. Like, say, Michael Barrett in an 8th inning situation.

I think Nelson was topping out at 87 last year, so it's not like it's a precipitous drop.

 

That being said, I've heard the same thing. Nelson is far from the most impressive reliever in Charlotte. Which is saying something, considering how overmatched Mr. Montero has looked.

I think that Nelson's strength is that sweping curve and his slider. A fastball at 85 to 90 to complement those pitches makes him tough when he has control and keeps the ball down.

Just one observation, and I don't know if anyone else thinks this or not... But if Brian Anderson is in CF, he makes that catch slowing down, and we get out of the inning... Mack took a Carl Everett route to the ball. He is awful in CF.

I was at the game, and was wondering if it would have made a difference. It seemed like maybe BA might have been able to make a play, but it was pretty hard to tell. Every swing Barrett took before the triple he seemed overmatched.

Yep, I was at the game and I'd have to agree. I think Anderson would have made that catch without a dive. It was the first thing I thought about afterwards. Bad defense and a sucky bullpen lost us the game yesterday.

 

As far as Nelson goes, our bullpen is so brutal right now that I don't see a problem with giving him a shot. We would have won that game 4-2 last season.

By doing his job, you mean something like getting a double play groundball to get out of the inning? Or get 4 outs in an inning if his D holds up at all? Neal did his job.

No he didn't. After the double-play-that-wasn't, they still had the lead with two outs with a runner on first. He then gave up a triple and two-run homer. Did his job, my ass.

Neal's job isn't to turn double plays and catch balls in CF. Neal got 4 outs that inning. It isn't his fault the defense let him down. How many times does he have to get outs before "he does his job"?

I agree that the double play was doable, but it wasn't exactly routine. That probably why neither Uribe or Paulie were charged with an error. And the liner to the RCF gap would've been a tough play for Andruw Jones, so blaming Mack is a bit far-fetched.

The reason nobody received an error is because you never assume a double play.

Uh, if Paul actually does his job, Escobar never faces Crede. Escobar got the out, Josh Paul screwed the play up.

 

As for the play in the OF, it looked a lot more difficult than it was because Mackowiak took an awful route to the ball. I have seen Anderson make that play in his sleep.

 

Also you might want to read up on how to score a baseball game. You cannot assume a double play, so you don't give an error to either player in that situation. It had nothing to do with if the play was routine or not, which that was about as taylor made of a DP as you'll see.
