August 14, 200619 yr I thought this would be a fun topic to discuss, the best teams since 1980. We could do all time but this is a lot easier for now. Here are mine 1. 1998 Yankees 2. 1984 Tigers 3. 1986 Mets 4. 2005 White Sox 5. 1989 A's
August 14, 200619 yr The '98 Yankees are by far and away the best team of the last 25 years, IMO. 2) '84 Tigers 3) '95 Braves 4) '89 Athletics 5) '05 White Sox
August 14, 200619 yr I'll play. 1998 Yankees 2005 White Sox 1997 Marlins 1989 A's 1995 Braves No research, just off the top of my head. (Notice most of the teams are in the 90's.
August 14, 200619 yr Cleveland's team '95 and Seattle in '01 are two of the best teams in the past quarter-century who didn't take home the big prize. The '98 Yankees had the best numbers and are pretty hard to ignore, as much as I would like to.
August 14, 200619 yr Gammons was talking about his short list last year in the WS. He named the 89 A's, the 99 Yanks, and the 05 Sox only behind the 98 Yanks as the most dominant teams in the last 25 years. 11-1 in the postseason pretty much seals this for us.
August 14, 200619 yr I don't know about the 2005 White Sox as a top team of the last 25 years. The '93 Blue Jays should be mentioned (and ahead of the White Sox). That team was loaded with talent.
August 14, 200619 yr QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) I don't know about the 2005 White Sox as a top team of the last 25 years. It's hard to compare all these teams imo. That being said when you win 99 games, go 11 and 1 in the postseason and have the dominating pitching that we did, then you definitely belong in the discussion.
August 14, 200619 yr QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 04:19 PM) I don't know about the 2005 White Sox as a top team of the last 25 years. Why not? Weren't they in first place everday of last year, have the best record in MLB nearly everyday last year(This even more impressive seeing how at no time has one league been so weak in comparison to the one the Sox play in over the past 25 years), and tie for the best playoff record ever while winning the World Series? What else did they need to do?
August 14, 200619 yr You can't forget the 1990 Reds, went wire to wire in their division and swept the "mighty" A's in the World Series. My list: 1. 1998 Yankees (125-50 including October, enough said) 2. 1984 Tigers 3. 2005 White Sox 4. 1990 Reds 5. (tie) 1989 A's and 1993 Blue Jays
August 14, 200619 yr QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) I don't know about the 2005 White Sox as a top team of the last 25 years. The '93 Blue Jays should be mentioned (and ahead of the White Sox). That team was loaded with talent. We had a better rotation and 'pen than they had in '93. Their offense was sick, though. August 15, 200619 yr Only two teams in the history of baseball have had the most wins in their league, went wire to wire, and swept the World Series. The 1927 Yankees and the 2005 White Sox.
August 15, 200619 yr QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 07:25 PM) Only two teams in the history of baseball have had the most wins in their league, went wire to wire, and swept the World Series. The 1927 Yankees and the 2005 White Sox. I love that fact......
August 15, 200619 yr That '84 Tigers team was awesome. I'd have to take them over the Yankees of '98.
August 17, 200619 yr although they didnt win a ws, the 01 mariners were 116-46 which is just incredible
August 18, 200619 yr QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 04:10 PM) We had a better rotation and 'pen than they had in '93. Their offense was sick, though. I guess I'm going more by talent on each team as opposed to just their record and accomplishments. I thought the '93 and '94 White Sox teams were better and more talented than last year's Sox team. Last year's Sox team didn't beat any team as good as the '93 team, imo.
August 21, 200619 yr QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 07:25 PM) Only two teams in the history of baseball have had the most wins in their league, went wire to wire, and swept the World Series. The 1927 Yankees and the 2005 White Sox. I busted this "fact" out on some cub fans in yankee outfits a couple weeks ago. They insisted the cubs were on this short list a couple times, I told them no sir.

August 24, 200619 yr QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 01:25 AM) I'm gonna be a homer and say... 1. 2005 White Sox everything else is irrelevant Gotta have 5, though. Tough choices to make, but I'll go with: 1. Sox on October 26, 2005 2. Sox on October 25, 2005 3. Sox on October 24, 2005 4. Marlins on October 14, 2003 5. Sox on October 23, 2005 As a check on yourself, always make sure your list is as balanced. Like mine.
August 25, 200619 yr I'm pretty disappointed in the selections here. Every single poster left out the one team that absolutely can not be stopped.... Probably hands down the best team ever. I'm just gonna post the roster and leave it to others to identify which team featured this absolutely rediculous lineup: Staff Ace: Roger Clemens Catcher: Mike Scoiscia First Base: Don "shave those sideburns" Mattingly Second Base: Steve Sax Third Base: Wade Boggs Shortstop: Ozzie Smith Left Field: Jose Canseco Center Field: Ken Griffey Junior Right Field: Daryl Strawberry By the way, I say england's great prime minster was Lord Palmerston... I don't care what Wade Boggs says about Pitt the Elder Edited August 25, 200619 yr by AbeFroman

August 25, 200619 yr QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Aug 25, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) That may be the greatest Simpson episode of all. Hank Scorpio disagrees.
