This guy Gaudin of the A's that we are facing tonite does anyone know anything about him or have access to some sort of scouting report. Maybe from ESPN insider or Baseball Prospectus. Just wondering what we are going to be up against tonight since we have never seen this guy before.

I hate when we face someone that we've never seen. We tend to look awful at the plate.

Well thats not just the sox. Id say at least the first time through the order facing a pitcher you have never seen and have no scouting report on is difficult. Most good hitters will adjust and get him by the 2nd or 3rd time through the order.

Here is ESPN.com profile for Gaudin. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5627

The only thing you can take are his career stats because this guy has mainly pitched out of the pen for a few teams over his career. Here they are along with ESPN's projections.

The only real interesting thing I can take is that in 164 career ML innings he has given up 19 hrs, 80 walks, and 104 K's. It equates to about 2 BB, 1.55 K's. and 1 HR per 9 Innings. So hes not dominating, but hes not awful. Hes got good control and doesn't strike out a ton of guys. Seems to be a guy who puts the ball in play but probably wont go deep into the game. Im not sure if hes a sinker ball guy or not but they key here seems to be get into the A's pen. Dont let help this guy Guadin out, make him prove he can beat you and beat you deep into ballgames since it looks like hes not a guy that naturally goes deep and throws a lot of pitches. Thats my scouting report. Can anyone help me out and draw a comparison to another pitcher we know?

He has a very good slider. Lefties historically mash him around the park, while righties struggle. Tonight would be a good night to get Mackowiak into the lineup for Dye. He can be wild, but he keeps the ball in the park.

Lefties....thats what we are a team thats heavy on good LH hitting. Should be a good matchup then. Probably gonna see:

Pods

Erstad

Konerko

Thome

Crede

AJ

Mack

Iguchi

Uribe

I have the choice... why post when you think we will lose.

kennedy will beat us, we cant beat soft tossing lefties, tomorrow that is.

I wouldn't call Kennedy a soft tosser, he doesn't throw in the mid 90's like he used to do, but he's from a powderpuff pitcher up there.

from mlb.com

Forced into the starting rotation in the wake of an injury to No. 2 starter Esteban Loaiza, Gaudin was given only two outings late in Spring Training to convert from the relief role he held with the A's in 2006. But he was primarily a starter in the Minors, and on Thursday, in the 11th start of his big-league career -- his last came in June 2005 while a member of the Toronto Blue Jays -- Gaudin gave up two runs on five hits without a walk while striking out three over five innings against the host Angels in Anaheim, leaving the game with a one-run lead. Gaudin threw 74 pitches and likely won't be allowed to throw more than 90 against the White Sox. He's made four previous appearances against them, allowing one run over 4 2/3 innings.

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Apr 10, 2007 -> 11:09 AM)
Gaudin is meat tonight go Sox!

Gaudin, 22, emerged with the Devil Rays in 2003 after signing as an unheralded 34th-round pick in 2001 out of high school in suburban New Orleans. He went 5-3, 2.13 in the Cal League, then 2-0, 0.47 in the Double-A Southern League to earn a surprise promotion to Tampa Bay, where he went 2-0, 3.60 in 40 innings.

He has never quite recaptured the magic of that season but has been a workhorse, splitting 2004 between the big leagues and Triple-A before getting traded for catcher Kevin Cash last December. He set a career-high with 150 innings and two shutouts at Triple-A Syracuse in 2005 and finishing fourth in the International League in ERA. He finished the minor league season at 9-8, 3.35 and went 1-3, 13.15--allowing six homers in 13 innings--after a September callup to Toronto.

Gaudin is primarily a two-pitch pitcher, but changes speeds well and is aggressive, with bulldog makeup. His fastball ranges from 86-92 mph, and his slider rates as average. If he continues to make strides with his changeup he could stay in a starting role, but more realistically he projects as a middle reliever.

Two pitch pitcher who tops at 92 with an average slider who get hit hard by lefties. This guy is toast tonight. Prediction Sox win 6-3.

He never recovered from the absolute beating he received on April 10, 2007 when the White Sox hit him all the way back to AA. Sox players finally decided to swing and miss on purpose to spare his family further embarrassment and dishonor. Despite this act of mercy, the Sox still scored 5 more runs swinging with their eyes closed as Gaudin continued to throw his fastball right at the hitter's bat. The Sox went on to completely deplete the Oakland A's bullpen and the game ended with Mike Piazza pitching the final 2 innings. With this game, the Sox reversed the perception that Oakland had their number and the Sox swept the season series. The confidence gained by the Sox during Gaudin's game, was a springboard to a 110 win season and the 2nd World Series Championship in 3 years which began the decade long dynasty.

Gaudin was never able to take the mound again without losing control of his bodily functions. He currently resides in seclusion somewhere in Canada.

Now Soxtalk, THINK POSITIVE!

Sox WILL beat Santana

Sox WILL sweep Oakland

Sox WILL hit unknown pitchers

Sox WILL win the central

Sox WILL win the World Series

Sox WILL have a baseball Dynasty

Soxtalk WILL NOT continue to depress me with constant negativity.

Thank You

more importantly, what kind of pitcher will Garland be tonight...

If I remember correctly, Garland got one of our rare Oakland wins, last year I think, or perhaps 05.

And Vazquez's stats against Minny were horrible, and look what he did Saturday. You never know in baseball.

Come On People. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to catch this math error.

His K rate is higher than Garland's.

I watched a little bit of his outing vs. the Angels last week, and IMO, he looks very unimpressive. This offense should have a field day off of him.

If one were not to have prior knowledge and base an opinion on one outing, one would also think Contreras was the worst pitcher in the MLB.
