Thome to the DL

Featured Replies

We just cleared a spot on the 40 man. Im sure a move will be made somehow. Also if we need an additional OF'er Sweeney would probably be the logical choice.

Dye to DH, Sweeney to RF.

I don't see Kenny making a move for a bat unless Thome is shelved for something like... 8 months.

Hello 4th place.

If Thome were to be placed on the DL for an extended period of time (3+ weeks) I'd do absolutely nothing.

I'm sorry, you can't reasonably replace Thome's production this early in the season without jeopardizing a large portion of your future. I'd like to know one general manager out there who wouldn't bend Williams over backwards.

However much we have to overpay (and I don't believe there's any doubt it would require overpayment) would it be worth it for one season? Even if Gonzalez alone is enought to land a bat?

Considering how Konerko, Dye, Pierzynski, Crede, Erstad are all hitting poorly, I'd rather count on them rebounding then doing anything drastic. By the nature of a major league lineup there are 8 other players available to compensate for a loss. Even one as potentially devastating as Thome. My feeling is if he's down, perhaps bring up Sweeney as an additional lefthanded bat (to satisfy Guillen).

Hell, we'll probably end the season poorly; but even with Thome there was no guarantee we'd be very good. Let's not forget about the starting pitching, which still determines our fate. If we lose; we lose. Just don't do anything stupid to salvage one season. One which is too early to know for sure whether we'll be in contention down the road.

So you're suggesting that Sweeney will be called up and an outside bat brought in, rather than Terrero coming up? I'm still thinking that Terrero will be up soon, but we'll see.

Per the blog:

Erstad, LF; Iguchi, 2B; Thome, DH; PK, 1B; Dye, RF; AJ, C; Crede, 3B; Mack, LF; Uribe, SS.

What the f*** is going on here? Thome DHing, Dye in RF and 2 guys in left. It's madness. So Thome is healthy afterall?

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Apr 27, 2007 -> 01:13 PM)
With Thome being injured almost all of 2005, and the second half of 2006, it's pretty bad news for him to be hurt this early in 2007.

Thome is in lineup tonight... :D

Thats the new defense. Two guys in LF, NOBODY in CF.

Take that baseball gods.

ROFLMAO

So... I am thoroughly confused.

I take it back. Fathom, you lose. :P

That's great. One thing Ozzie needs to do is get Thome some days off against LHP over the course of the season and try to prevent nagging injuries. I like the lineup tonight...Angels are playing well though.

Any word on whether he is actually playing or not?

Baseball Tonight last night also said he would play today.

It would be impossible to fully replace Thome's offensive production but something would need to be done. At this point in the season it's not widely known who is available exactly but I'm sure if Thome did hit the DL we'd hear some names thrown out there in the press.

Raul Ibanez?

If Thome is out for an extended period... Reggie Sanders probably wouldn't be too difficult to pry from the Royals.

Since he's playing tonight, this thread is no longer needed.

Update:

Exited the game in the first inning, so still needed.

We're screwed

Here's hoping Williams doesn't do anything too drastic.

So long 2007?

What the f*** even happened?

It might very well spark our team. It wouldn't be the first time a team lost a huge player in trade or injury then rallied. The Twins of last year are a good example, I think, with Liriano and Hunter (if I'm not mistaken). It wouldn't even be the first time with a Sox team -- Ventura, 97!

It was quite obvious Thome was in much worse shape than anybody was letting on.

Possible options if not Ryan Sweeney...

J. Burnitz

Alexis Gomez

Aaron Guiel

Hollandsworth

Terrence Long

Q. McCracken

Michael Tucker

Bernie Williams

The Twins were playing really well before Radke and especially Liriano went down...I wouldn't say the injury inspired then so much as they survived it with Baker, Bonser, Garza.

It was really the turnaround of Morneau in early June and the insertion of Liriano into the rotation, along with the release of Batista and the insertion of Punto into the line-up that really sparked that team last year.

Bernstein was all over that one.

Calling Eduardo Perez. Would be great to have against lefties.
