June 4, 200718 yr Apparently he feels he made a "rash" decision, because the Magic gave him 24 hourd to decide after offering him the contract, in a take it or leave it kind of way. And I don't blame the Magic with that type of window, if Donovan refused in the 1st place, which he SHOULD have done if he wasn't 100% confident he wanted the Magic job, then the Magic can move on quickly and get another head coach. Now they've missed out on a couple if Donovan does leave, and our next main target Van Gundy could decide to just go to Sacramento, because the Magic snubbed him for another head coach. Really it's a messy situation, and it makes both parties look like complete jokes.

Apparently, they may have only been hours from doing so. I also think this is pretty lame. He basically has a case of buyer's remorse. At some point these coaches need to put the brakes on rushing into these decisions OR stick with it. Basically what is happening is the process gets rushed so much so the decision is made before the media swell hits.
June 5, 200718 yr Supposedly, the NBA might ban him from going to the NBA for 5 years... So what? He probably wouldn't do it now anyway. Going to the Magic would have been the easiest place to go...no pressure like the Heat, not rebuilding like the Hawks and near Gainesville, so he could keep his family close. I think the Magic should let him out of the deal and the Gators shouldn't take him back...but that's just me. I'm sure he's sorry and feels horrible, but, he's hurt the Magic, he's hurt the Gators, he's hurt Anthony Grant of VCU, he's hurt the players that thought they were going to play for him...I don't care if a team gives you a 24 hour window or not...this is a big decision and if a team is going to force you to make that decision to pick up and leave a good job, move your family, etc., then I would tell them, either 1) if you want me that bad, give me a couple more days to discuss and think about it or 2) get bent because it isn't fair to me. Donovan lost a little shine on that hair of his with this move.

There were a bunch of season tickets sold on Friday after the announcement, so they may well have grounds for a case, but it would certainly be a difficult one to make given that no money changed hands and they didn't launch a full ad campaign.

June 6, 200718 yr He's not getting "banned" and the NBA has nothing to do with it. The Magic are including a simple non-compete clause in the buyout agreement to protect their own interests. Think how they would feel if he has another change of heart after next season and lands as the Head Coach of the Miami Heat? Non-compete clauses are pretty standard fare in certain business situations.
