Crede to start rehab in Arizona

White Sox third baseman Joe Crede will start his rehabilitation program on his lower back this week in Arizona.

That development was revealed Monday by agent Scott Boras, who declined to confirm whether his client would be ready to return by the end of the regular season.

"The main thing is we want him back healthy and at full strength," Boras said. "The key is that we resolved a problem that Joe had been playing in a great deal of pain and seeing that the problem is not something that would affect his long-term future. That he's going to be a completely healthy player again is something we're really happy about getting accomplished."

Boras said Crede's operation, in which fluid and small particles were removed from the area where nerves were irritated, was "a very easy fix and the doctor (Robert Watkins) is very optimistic about Joe's full return and just a matter of time in him going forward."

After Crede was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 6 and underwent surgery a week later, many Sox observers wondered why Crede didn't have off-season surgery to repair the bulging disks in Crede's lower back.

But "the doctors all said they were against surgery because the pain level was symptomatic. The doctors recommended he not have surgery because he had a great season, played well and didn't affect his play," Boras said. "It was just the wear and tear of the season brought it to this level.

I'm shocked that Bora$ was so positive about Crede.

Why? he has to build up his guy for his impending free agency status.

(yes, I know he is a FA after 2008)

Not obvious enough for you?

he was being so obviously sarcastic that the use of green was deemed unnecessary.

Of course Boras is predicting a full recovery for Joe.

I hope Joe comes back at 100%. If not this year, definately for 08. Do it Joe.

Borass reminds me of Jim Carrey's character from Dumb and Dumber when he sells the dead parrot to the blind kid. What blind idiot will sign Crede and his back to a huge contract? I know one that won't and this is a case where I am glad KW won't deal with Borass.

What if he has a very good, injury free 08, would you do it?

No but I would deal him at the deadline. Fields is the future at 3B.

we use green for a reason ;). Sorry, my sarcasm meter wasnt on

Yep, if he has a great year, then he'll net a lot at the deadline. Who wouldn't want a Gold Glove-caliber 3B who can rake too?

I agree. I meant will another GM throw a lot of loot at him?

If he has a healthy and productive '08 season? Yes.

So what is joe next year? Arbitration eligible? Signed? Option?

Damn, where is that guy with his sig?

Lmao, it was right above my post. Time for bed.

Interesting. I hope Joe can come back and swing the bat well. It will give the Sox reason to work out an agreement with him and with time he should be able to create some trade value and in turn allow the Sox to get something of value for Joe (or keep him if they opt to go with that method while moving Fields to LF).

Still I'd be stunned if Crede stuck around after proving himself healthy (heck he may very well get non-tendered).

hopefully he can return at the end of the season, and shows he is healthy and ready to play and maybe rake for a while. If so, we could trade him and get a nice little package in return in the offseason.

My roomate and I were discussing this this afternoon. The question becomes, how do you play Joe and build his trade value without stunting Josh's development? Do you platoon them? Does Josh rotate between third and left field and dh?

I'm already feeling the pain at third without Joe, even though I have been saying for a year or so that Joe's defense is taken for granted. But I guess this is one of the side-effects of signing Mark- even if Joe does somehow make a full recovery- we don't have the money to sign him long term.

It's going to be a difficult situation for Ozzie getting Joe the pt he needs to build his value without messing with Fields' development too much. I guess we'll know more by season's end.

Will the Sox offer Crede arbitration? Look what happened with Mags coming off of an injury, and when he did leave we received no compensation because he was non-tendered.

Boras is going to start the bidding for Crede at 6 Years 100 Mil. He will take his career .259 avg and .305 OBP to the dodgers or Dbacks.

Does injury affect arbitration? If so, Crede doesn't have a leg to stand on, no pun intended. Not sure how that works.

I think if healthy there is no way he is non-tendered. If A-Rod opts out think the Yanks could use him?

The difference being that Maggs had to fly to another country to get a surgical procedure that was not allowed to be completed in the US. Joe had simple back surgery.

If Joe can play in Spring Training next year...hit a little, field a little, not get hurt, he'll be gone by opening day.

I'd rather see Crede return healthy and then re-sign him and move Fields to the outfield. Defenders of Crede's caliber don't come around very often, and healthy, I still think he's a .300/30/100 guy for a few years to come. The operative word of course is "healthy."
