The option is a vesting option. Not a club option. It automatically kicks in if he reaches a certain number of plate appearances.

Keeping Griffey over Thome would be a bad idea. Thome is 37 and would cost us 13 mil, while Griffey is 38 and would cost us 16.5 mil. And there is no way Griffey has a better year than Thome.
