November 8, 200817 yr "As we stand here today," Williams said at the just-concluded annual general managers meetings, "we're going to give [our young players] a chance to join this new core of ours. That's as we stand here today." That means Chris Getz and Jayson Nix will have first shot at second base, second-year major-leaguer Alexei Ramirez at shortstop, Josh Fields at third base and Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson in center field. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,5180895.story I like the idea of getting younger and faster, but wouldn't Owens be a horrible starting OF?
November 8, 200817 yr QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) I like the idea of getting younger and faster, but wouldn't Owens be a horrible starting OF? Okay, can we PLEASE stop overreacting every time KW uses the press to send a message. I would bet good money that just before he made this statement, he ended a conversation with another GM who was asking too much for the player KW really wants to play CF for the Sox. KW uses the media in this manner all the time. Rarely do his November declarations turn into mission statements for the coming season.
November 8, 200817 yr I'm just hoping Jerry Owens is not with this team in any capacity come April. I'd rather have Taveras as he is 10x better defensively, and is a more effective base stealer. Edited November 8, 200817 yr by BearSox
November 8, 200817 yr Honestly...what would you expect Kenny to say?..."Jerry Owens is just plain bad...we really want no part of him..." and kill whatever value he may have.
November 8, 200817 yr QUOTE (Wanne @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) Honestly...what would you expect Kenny to say?..."Jerry Owens is just plain bad...we really want no part of him..." and kill whatever value he may have. Kenny probably could have boosted Owens' value simply by saying, "We think Jerry Owens can be a serviceable 4th outfielder in the Major Leagues."
November 8, 200817 yr Where does Kenny utter the words Jerry Owens? Kenny saying that hes going to give some young guys a chance, doesn't mean he's going to give Jerry Owens a chance. Edited November 8, 200817 yr by sircaffey
November 8, 200817 yr Guys it's the beginning of the offseason and the GM is Kenny Williams. This is like trying to predict the career field of a 3 year old. Just don't bother. Edited November 9, 200817 yr by lostfan

November 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 04:52 PM) Guys it's the beginning of the offseason and the GM is Kenny Williams. This is like trying to predict the career field of a 3 year old. Just don't bother. If its a 3-year-old of someone in the White Sox management/coaching staff, then its safe to say they will be baseball players...drafted by the White Sox between rounds 7 and 36.
November 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 01:59 PM) Kenny probably could have boosted Owens' value simply by saying, "We think Jerry Owens can be a serviceable 4th outfielder in the Major Leagues." Right, telling everyone he would be a serviceable bench player is better than telling everyone he could start
November 10, 200817 yr How long are we going to continue calling Jerry Owens young? f***er's going to be 28 on opening day.
November 10, 200817 yr QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) I like the idea of getting younger and faster, but wouldn't Owens be a horrible starting OF? KW never said that, it was the writer making assumptions, which were incorrect.
January 31, 200917 yr Author QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Nov 8, 2008 -> 08:55 AM) I like the idea of getting younger and faster, but wouldn't Owens be a horrible starting OF? PLEASE stop asking why!
January 31, 200917 yr Author I agree bashing Owens equates to beating a dead horse. However, mentioning the possibility that Owens could be starting was discarded as overreaction. That was a tenable response because of how early in the offseason that question was being asked. The question was not an overreaction in my view b/c Owens was supposed to start (anyone remember last spring training?) until he got Scotty Pod's syndrome, which paved the way for Quentin.
January 31, 200917 yr QUOTE (lord chas @ Jan 31, 2009 -> 01:23 AM) jerry owens is as useful as a dirty diaper They are useful to keep rabbits out of your garden. No green intended.

February 1, 200917 yr http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,1145510.story Yet another story on Owens. You would think he was Jesse Owens or Terrell Owens, as much coverage/ink as he's gotten this off-season after not even being recalled last year.

A fast guy, using a track specialist to teach him how to run to be healthy. Thats all fine and dandy, except for the fact that this is baseball and not a track meet. Perfect form goes out the window the minute your cleat hits the dirt and you realize that you are not running a relay. Stealing a base is a different type of movement than a track meet.

If he's thinking about proper form when a ball is hit in the air, he will get even a worse jump than he normally gets. This reminds me of when the Bears drafted Willie Gault and he saw Walter Payton run. He said he was going to show him a better form to make him faster. It didn't go very far.
