I know there's a thread here somewhere on them, but the search feature aint on so I'm starting a new one.

 

The HP I've had forever finally bit the dust. I need a new one ASAP - and HP is out of the camera market. Must be at least 10mp's and take video in the .mpg format (so Kodak's are not an option as I don't want to mess with converting the files). TIA for suggestions.

I was thumbing through a Consumer Report's magazine at Border's a couple weeks ago and they were featuring digital cameras. You might want to stop by and pick up the magazine. Unfortunately I can't remember their top picks.

Why do you need 10 megapixels? Are you printing lots of oversized images, or doing any photo work that requires digital zoom? 10 MP is way overkill for most people -- you're better focusing on a camera with a better lens, photo sensor, image stabilization, and/or faster shutter time.

 

Also, are you looking for a simple camera, a small camera, a "prosumer" level camera, or a professional/DSLR camera? Do you have a price range in mind? What's the memory card format on your HP? Do you have a preferred memory card format? Do you want a rechargable battery, or a camera that takes AA/AAA batteries?

Canon has been good to me.

Nikon has been good to me. And the 10 is great if you are planning on printing posters, but you can put that money into other features as mentioned above.

I love my Casio Exilim... Very easy to use and takes great pictures. My mom and sister also own one - that's how much we like that camera.

If you have $3,750 RED is a good option

Yes, they do play on Windows Media Player.

To be honest I can work around the mp's. It's the video format I'm more concerned about. I've been hearing great things about the canon's and no matter what to stay away from the Sony's.

That would probably be ok since I have some other software for the more complicated stuff. Mainly I want the camera software to keep things organized and easy to find. The more I read about it the more I like it. I'm going out after Bri's in bed to check the couple I am interested in out. Thanks

I made a couple of short videos and they transferred to my computer in AVI format.

 

So, it's pretty simple to view and edit them in most popular players and editors.

I have to keep a couple thousand pics organized for work and after trying a couple programs, none was much better than Google's Picaso for free. There are easy work arounds on the video formats, several decent translation type programs. Seriously, most of the pre packaged software is crapware. Crippled versions of the program they want you to buy.

Me, too. I have to say that Casio - the black one with the huge display - was right up there but I just couldn't justfy the extra $$ with the features of both being so similar. The appearance of the Casio is clearly nicer, but the stainless steel of the Canon is logical with a 1 year old who is all of a sudden wanting to take pictures with mommy's camera

 

 

I second the Picasa suggestion. Also fantastic, but far more advanced, is the GIMP.
