The Ibanez deal looked stupid when it was signed, and it looks even worse now. It had less to do with the economy and more to do with poor decision making, IMO. Abreu was right to expect he should get a better deal than Ibanez, but he probably threw away better money back in November. But even still, this deal probably has little to do with the economy and more to do with bargaining position. Spring training is about to start and he wants to play. My point is, KW MIGHT have been able to trade Dye if we ate more than half his salary, ~$6M. The net cost would still be the same. It's believed the Angels are offering a one-year deal in the $5 million to $6 million range, while Abreu wants something closer to $8 million. I don't get why Abreu would sign with them especially if he himself wanted 8 million which is what KW offered. I find that every big name player that doesn't sign with us it makes me feel like people honestly don't think we can contend. Honestly, thats what I love about the Sox! They always prove everyone wrong. We turn forgotten talent into superstars and get Cuban all-stars and we still play good baseball. Why won't someone take a chance with us seriously. He's a better clutch hitter with men on base and would get on base himself in front of a ton of power. I would have packed Dye's bags for him if we could have traded him. This should be rephrased to we are a questionable team right now with young guys that we don't know what we are going to get out of. I have been saying this since the offseason started that the Sox are a huge questionmark. Abreu even in center or left would have been a great investment at the cost and we easily could of plugged him into the 2 hole. I just don't understand how we offer 8, but he gets signed for 5. They probably told his agent, who then told people, that the Sox were willing to give him $8 million if they could get rid of a player. They were never able to get rid of said player.
