Except Griffey and Swisher were a combined 1 for 11 w/ 0 HR pinch hitting last year. Anderson and Wise both hit 1 a piece. Betemit hit 3 in 29 AB in '07.

Also worth noting is that Anderson and Wise both had 14-12 at bats as pinch-hitting, so they're not far from Betemit's ratio there.

JVB is simply not very good. The Pirates can have him back.

Agreed, he's terrible. Coop can't fix everyone. JVB really should reconsider trying hitting, or he's going to be out of baseball soon.

I almost expect to see a line shot somewhere in the OF every time he swings, based on the effort, but all I get is a dribbler to the right side. It's so unfulfilling.

 

so what do you guys see getz doing this year? frankly if he leads off...i think he basically gives you exactly what orlando cabrera gave last year ...

He never sqaures up the ball, every piece of contact is partial and there is nothing behind it. I hate to use this example since he really wasnt that great, but PODs had a very level swing that stayed in the zone a bit and allowed him to have some decent contact at time. All of jerry's hits are glancing blows.

I think that's a very apt comparison. About a .75/.80 BB/K and .85/.90 ISO. Efficient baserunning and solid defense up the middle. He's certainly not going to kill you or piss you off in the leadoff spot.

Podsednik had the same issue Owens has in his last year in Milwaukee, IIRC. Every swing was uppercut, and all he got were weak grounders and popups. The White Sox and Pods obviously did some work to help Pods with this in '05, so they know what they're doing. Why don't they work with Owens, or (more likely) why doesn't he listen?

Oh boy...that's interesting, as I heard a very unconfirmed rumor that the wrist is bugging him this ST. That's why I asked last week about how his health has been reported.

I like it. Getz isn't flashy but he's got good fundamental skills. He makes contact. He's got a good batting eye. He can bunt. And he can run.

 

I really don't see any advantage to Owens leading off over Getz.

Its not really that hard. I'm willing to be there is a significant number of folks on this board that could hit a ball at least to the wall at the Cell.
