My understanding is that he is a free agent to be after this year. He is valued by Seatle like a one yet has never pitched 200 innings in a season. It looks like he missed a turn recently. What would it take, what would you give? What would his rank as a free agent be ie draft compensation or with his history what would it take to sign?

From what I understand of Bedard, he wouldn't survive here. He is a guy who begs out of games, and seems to get "injured" easy and often.

It seems to me that except for the handful of truly elite pitchers, almost anybody you sign would have potential flaws. It's the nature of pitching today.

Look at KC.

Meche. He was simply horrible yesterday and is 2-5.

Bannister is doing pretty well this year after a horrid season.

Even CC is up and down year to year.

Cliff Lee.

Zambrano gets hurt once in a while.

Is there any guarantee Greinke will pitch like this consistently one year to the next? Some of Detroit's pitchers have been Jeckyll/Hyde.

What about Nolasco who had to be send down after last year's success??

Don't you agree anybody you sign to a multi year deal is a big risk? How can teams sign anybody??

The Sox won't be in the Bedard sweepstakes. He just doesn't fit what they preach.

What a pitcher asks for is not necessarily equal to what a pitcher gets. If someone offers him stupid money (5/$75 or something like that) then not a chance. It's an open question where the market will be, even for left handed starting pitching, this offseason.

While that's true, recent history suggests that a some desperate team will offer him stupid money. By stupid money, I mean at least 20% above his "actual value" (as defined only in my head).

Hey, if we want a rotation with 5 lefty starters, then Bedard's our man. Just trade Gavin Floyd for him, and bring up Poreda to fill out the fifth slot.

I usually dislike hard and fast rules without flexibility, but here it has served us well. I could see, and it would also depend on the total money, relaxing the rule for Mark B.

The Sox actually got burned pretty bad on a "four" year deal very recently. Contreras was under contract for 2006 but the front office extended him 3 more years before the season even started, Jose then proceeded to put up a 5.40 ERA from June 1st, 2006 to present. So the Sox have gone against their philosophy a few times in recent years. It's a damn good philosophy though, the number of starting pitchers who have even come close to living up to expectations on a 4+ year deal over the past decade or so can be counted on one hand this is why I would have been ok with dealing Buehrle at the deadline in '07 instead of extending him.

 

Bedard is the lefty version and slightly more reliable (though that's not saying much) of Mark Prior.

 

Basically, Bedard has + stuff and can be downright filthy...but look at his career? There isn't much of one to talk about. Completely NOT dependable.

 

The only way I'd take on Bedard is with a heavy incentive-laden deal.

This team needs a righty much more than it needs a lefty. . especially with the recent sucess of Richard. Bedard will be traded, but just not to the White Sox.
