ST: vs Giants

Heh, the announcer got all excited on a Juan Pierre flyball to left like it was going to get over the fielder's head. I'd venture to guess that Juan won't put a single ball over an outfielders head all year.

Fixed.

As a passive Giants fan, this is okay, but as a primary Sox fan, this sucks. Torres is a nobody and he croizened it.

ah, the old infield pop up

Don Cooper is a great strategist.

Getting the starters to have crap performances in games that don't count... and get them out of the way before the season starts.

Brilliant.

Did Melton just call Tony Pena, Carlos Pena? Did I hear that right?

Ok, now he got it right.

The Sox have Carlos Pena up in the pen, that 'ought to be interesting. Is he on lease from the Rays?

It's a bit scary that we're getting great production from Jones and Kotsay this spring, and our offense still looks awful. I'm not giving up yet though, it is only spring training.

JJ Poots reference...a Bill Melton classic.

Hopefully Melton is just confused. Because the thought of Linebrink being our 8th inning guy scares the crap out of me.

Melton is beyond confused.

What's the deal with Melton? They grooming him to be a future play-by-play or color guy? Or is he getting paid intern money to do ST games?

He's 65 years old, something tells me he's beyond grooming.

He should probably pay us to listen to him. He makes Santo sound like a HOF broadcaster.

He's on loan from Rays. They want to see if he's fit for training before throwing him back onto the pitch. Soccer terminology actually makes sense applied to baseball.

Eh, about to tune in.. Sox pitching going trough some spring training dead arm period?

Dull game, here are my odds for closer at end of season:

Thornton 3-1

Jenks 10-1

Pena 10-1

Putz 20-1

Santos 50-1

The Sox had the 3rd best team offense during the Spring of 2007, we finished the year with the worst offense.

Santo gets paid to do his job Melton is on the internet. I also think Melton is better. Santo can not even string a thought together.

Teahen with a couple hard hit balls

Mark Teahen gets the ball over the first baseman, ruled E 3.

As a fielder? Ouch!

Repeat after me, Spring Training is about getting work in and not about results. See Anderson, Brian the king of ST for a reference of HOF ST guys who can't hit the same pitchers when they move north.

Breaking ball pitchers particularly have issues in Arizona in ST. Breaking pitches do not have the depth that they do when they leave. Guys are just throwing to the glove, getting their work in, working on a location or pitch. This is why guys like Brian Anderson can look like the next version of Willie Mays in Arizona only to get punked when breaking pitches start to dart and dive. Also with about 2 weeks to go most starting pitchers start to get a dead arm period as part of the process of building their arm up to push 90 to 100 pitches.

Yep, and it's why Andruw Jones performing well shouldn't be surprising. He can hit anyone's fastball, and with the ball not breaking much in Arizona, he's going to crush pitches. Same goes with Soriano.

"A homerun here would change the complexity of the ballgame"

Beckham sucks!!!!!

That's exactly why I brought up Soriano's name in the "Andruw Jones" thread. He hit .325/.375/.613/.988 with 6 HR last spring. Then he came north, breaking balls started breaking and he finished with an OPS just over .700.
