Alexei's Finger

Good news, I think. Alexei's bat is still below average, but we can't afford to lose that glove.

He had a nice little day today though.

We need that man!

Especially now with the warmer weather.

Ozzie says he thinks he just split a nail and should be DTD.

From the way his hand was positioned over his mitt, and the way that Hermie gauzed it, it makes sense.

Like usual, his bat is heating up with the weather. The pleasant surprise has been his crazy good defense lately.

Atleast we should get more Dayan now with Omar moving to SS for the time being.

Ramirez just suffered a cut under his middle finger on his throwing hand. Said he will play tomorrow. - Scott Merkin

Yep. If Viciedo is up here, he should be in the lineup 3-4 days a week.

Maybe I missed something, but I don't understand why Kenny didn't wait until Teahen came back from the DL before DFAing Nix. As bad as Nix is, he's still a lot better than Lillibridge.

They'll just put skin glue on it and he'll be fine.

When Ozzie says day to day I think week to week.

when has that happened before? It may have, I just can't think of any specific examples off the top of my head. For the most part the Sox are extremely straightforward with injury news.

He's straightforward but also says that when a player says he's ready, he gets another day. Vizquel will probably start at SS today.

As soon as it happened and they were showing him looking at his finger, you could see it was a bloody fingernail. That had to hurt.

Someone just needs to pull his finger.

Ehh...at the shortstop position? I'm fine with it. He's on pace to put up a .262/14/62 line at that position and we know he's capable of more power than that so there's not a lot of complaining to do there for me.

Yes, even at the SS position a .262/.294/.393/.688 line is below average. And why do we know he's capable of more power? Until he proves otherwise, 2008 might've very well been an outlier, as he hasn't shown anything close to that type of power in the last year and a half.

I'm not gonna look it up, but is that seriously a below average line for a major league shortstop? I know he'll never be an OBP guy but I just figured his offense was at least major-league average for the position.

Right now his OPS+ is 81. Last year it was 87, when he put up a .723 OPS on the season. It was 103+ when he put up a .788 OPS as a rookie.

He probably needs to get that OPS up in the .750-.775 range to be an average offensive SS.

They shoud of got that spray that cures everything for soccer players during the world cup :lolhitting

Huh. Interesting.

I guess he's also a player that needs to be judged later in the year since he hibernates until summer.

I don't have or know where to find league average numbers for specific positions. I just go to fangraphs and look at his rankings in certain categories amongst everyday shortstops. And it's never a good thing when you have a lower OPS than Yuniesky Betancourt.

We haven't really seen a stretch for Alexei since 2008 where he hits everything that is thrown to him and shows occasional power. Either he'll do one or he'll do the other, he hasn't had any real consistency since 08.

I'd rather have the 2010 Alexei who has been spectacular at SS, except for a couple of naps.

Now that he's playing solid defense, can he take the solid defense into the batters box with him?
