September 27, 201015 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2010 -> 02:02 PM) I don't know if rich ballplayers and managers consider worship of the fans unhealthy. They like it. Strokes their egos. And their wives like being important as well. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 26, 2010 -> 04:33 PM) stop trolling for arguments. This really has nothing to do with the conversation at hand and everyone knows you are just looking for someone to argue with this position What kyyle said. Greg, knock it off. The schitck is getting just flat out annoying.

WTF are you talking about trolling for arguments? I won't knock it off BTW. So tell somebody else to knock it off. Or ban me. I won't be told to "knock it off." "And he's in a town that has an unhealthy personal worship of their baseball players and managers." How is responding to that line "trolling for arguments?" You either read my post wrong or you are looking for s*** to ban me on. THis is a reasonable response And he's in a town that has an unhealthy personal worship of their baseball players and managers. September 27, 201015 yr QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2010 -> 08:36 PM) I won't be told to "knock it off." You may wish to rethink that position. Everyone who posts here, everyone, has to play by the same rules. There are two groups of people here, those that have been told to knock it off (including myself and almost all the mods/admins), and those that will be told at some time to knock it off. Those that won't be told, aren't posting here.
September 27, 201015 yr And back to the thread... LaRussa commented on coming back to coach the Sox, saying he loves Chicago, but St. Louis is something else, if it hasn't already been stated.
September 27, 201015 yr QUOTE (Tex @ Sep 26, 2010 -> 08:03 PM) Of the Sox managers over the past 30 years, we're discussing the two best. Do you want old and experienced, or still rough around the edges? I don't believe Ozzie is built for the long haul. No way he's still managing in 25 years. I'd have to see who else is mentioned, but I'd like to see Tony on the short list. In terms of "Built for the Long Haul"...I'd say there's more of a chance that Ozzie is managing in 25 years than LaRussa.
September 27, 201015 yr I've read it several times and I can't figure out why Greg was warned. If what he posted is "trolling for arguments", then so is about 1/3 of the posts on this board.
September 28, 201015 yr Leonard — After reading your post, I sent greg a PM. He's not been warned, but banned. October 19, 201015 yr He always takes a couple weeks after the season and decides to come back. Time off is overrated. By spring training, he'll be raring to go. It's a pretty good gig if one can handle all the second guessing. And the bucks the managers get paid, it's probably pretty easy to handle second guessing. I bet Piniella will get bored as well unless he has a cushy TV gig.

A manager like LaRussa and even Ozzie probably don't care that much about the second guessing of the fans. They can't really, and be successful. I agree that Pinella might get bored. He's a volatile guy, and all he's really known for a long time is managing...and he's been pretty good at it. You never know, he might resurface somewhere with another team.

I would think it is stressful, but the fact LaRussa only needs a couple weeks to think about it every offseason (and Leyland too) to decide to come back proves it's a pretty nice way to early zillions. I realize Leyland was out of the game a while, but he's in no hurry to quit anymore, even though someday he's going to probably regret all those cigarettes he smoked because of the stress of managing. I can see smoking during ones 20s when people party a lot and go to the bars a lot, or smoking just on the occasions you are partying in your 20s, but anybody over the age of 30 who smokes is really pretty stupid unless they have a deathwish. Sorry about getting sidetracked, but I started thinking about the pressures of managing. Edited October 20, 201015 yr by greg775

Sorry about getting sidetracked, but I started thinking about the pressures of managing. I would imagine that at some point during a season, most managers think about quitting, retiring, etc. Especially guys who have been around for a long time, like LaRussa and Leyland. And some years when they say they are pondering it and leave the mdia and fans to guess, maybe they actually mean it. I would probably be very difficult to make that decision to retire. Maybe they actually need those few weeks to think about it, or maybe it is a tactic for more cash. As far as Leyland, though, for as good as a manager he is, he can smoke all he wants.

Yes he can smoke all he wants, but he's gonna pay the piper for all that smoking someday. Unless he's very very lucky and one of those freakish guys that can smoke until he's 100 and have it not affect him.
