I'd like to know where the White Sox stand in comparison to the rest of the league in terms of payroll (the amount they're paying, not including money that's being covered by other teams). I have a feeling they're closer to the middle of the pack than the top.

 

I'm not saying they're cheap exactly, but I don't think they spend an especially high amount. $100 million sounds like a ton, but I'm starting to think that quite a few other teams are in that range.

Speaking from the gut, I'd rather see the Sox use the kind of money that Crawford would command differently. Dunn has been mentioned, Konerko can be signed, etc. He's a great ballplayer, no doubt, there is just something about him getting a wtf contract that doesn't sit right with me. I'd love to have had Soriano sign here as a FA coming out of Washington too. I think I prefer the current method of doing things, flawed as it may be. I'll be content with the Mets, Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox throwing their wallets at free agents.

I think the only thing we've differed on is that I believe you stated that going after Jackson at all was a bad idea whereas I believe that he was a good target if you got him as a salary dump only.

 

But I think our mutual love for the Phillies organization makes up for that.

Good. I was starting to get worried. I never wanted Jackson under any circumstance. Although I will concede he pitched well for us in the 9 starts or whatever it was.

I felt that with the Peavey injury and the Sox still having a fighters chance at that point that getting a starter was a good idea, and Jackson is a big time arm to acquire, but I've already stated my distaste for what we gave up.

 

My thinking was that Jackson probably would atleast be competent underneath Cooper, but probably the same as Hudson overall the rest of the season, but I saw Hudson staying and Freddy going to long relief because he looked cooked. Than after the season you evaluate your pitching staff and trade one of the higher salary guys, whether it be another dump of Jackson (because apparently you can find a sucker of a GM to take on that salary even when the pitcher isnt doing well at all) or someone like Buehrle.

We will not get Carl Crawford, track record people. Kenny will make a trade: quentin, Floyd, (Teahen packaged w/ someone else).

Honestly, it will come back to haunt us in some sort of fashion this offseason, the Sox are so limited right now in payroll that the Peavy, Rios, and Jackson moves will be scrutinized heavily now that it is a distinct possibility that one of the fan favorites will be forced out due to their demands or current contract (Danks, Buehrle, etc.).

Opening day payroll was #7 in baseball (with the note that the Dodgers were paying enough of Pierre's salary that in an honest sense we were #8).
