October 26, 201015 yr It was obvious Thornton would be back, but I wasn't sure on Castro. I'm glad he is back as he's a proven backup catcher and he played great in that role this year.

So maybe he isn't a gold glove 3b (we all knew that going in), but he looks like he could be a competent 1b with plus power, you don't just trade that away especially when he's cost controlled unless you get a VERY good package in return.

This is the same exact kind of stuff people were saying about Viciedo last year, and then he had a good all around season. The example I used was JP Arencibia for Toronto. Had a piss-poor 2009, comes back this year, destroys AAA pitching, and he's looked at in a different light again. Flowers is still a relatively young player. This is a very important season for him, but considering him a non-prospect after his first full go around in AAA is pretty ridiculous.

He definitely has more value to the Sox right now than in a trade, he needs to turn it around which is very possible but right now it's not looking good.

First...he's a non-prospect in a trade sense. Although he started the year in BA's top 60, he's clearly fallen from that standing. Thus, right now, in building our 2011 team, he's not helpful on the trade front. Second...we actually need a catcher right now! Flowers had such a terrible season that even people who tend to like giving young guys a shot after they've worked their way up (i.e. Me) are currently unable to figure out how we could gamble on Flowers as the starting C next year. In the long term he may still have some promise, but he's at best a throw-in for most trades right now, and he's at best a huge risk as the starting catcher next year.
