November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) But not many teams have as much available cash as the Tigers do though. That is a pretty big assumption right now. Have you seen anything actually that the Tigers payroll will be a certian amount next year?
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 07:13 PM) That is a pretty big assumption right now. Have you seen anything actually that the Tigers payroll will be a certian amount next year? Besides every baseball writer reporting they're going to sign two big bats this offseason? It's been everywhere. They've already signed Jhonny and Benoit to pretty big deals, and they're considered the leaders for VMart and Dunn. They unloaded a ton of payroll from last season.

November 17, 201015 yr Author QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) But not many teams have as much available cash as the Tigers do though. Holes at C, 2B/SS (wherever they end up putting Peralta), RF, and DH offensively. Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello are their only 3 guaranteed starters, and I still don't think you can count on Porcello to really do anything yet. They had a 33 year old closer and just signed a 33 year old setup man to a 3 year contract that is worth more annually than Scott Linebrink's deal. I mean, seriously...their signings so far this offseason have included resigning Brandon Inge and Jhonny Peralta and signing Joaquin Benoit. It's obviously still early, but that's like $20 million committed next season to a two terrible hitters (though one of them is good defensively) and a reliever who has had 3 years his entire career and has never put up two good seasons in a row. They aren't being smart with their money right now; what makes you think they will be smart with it later?
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 07:19 PM) They signed Jhonny Damon? Huh? Peralta
November 17, 201015 yr Heyman reporting that Orioles are going after Konerko (like they did after 2005).

November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 10:23 AM) Heyman reporting that Orioles are going after Konerko (like they did after 2005). I am reporting that Konerko will say NO.
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 06:24 PM) Boston is the leader for Vmart. Everything that I've seen says they want to go with Salty at their catcher next year and will spend their money on Beltre and/or trying to get AGon.
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) Besides every baseball writer reporting they're going to sign two big bats this offseason? It's been everywhere. They've already signed Jhonny and Benoit to pretty big deals, and they're considered the leaders for VMart and Dunn. They unloaded a ton of payroll from last season. I know they have a bunch of money coming off of the books, but to assume they will spend it again is a pretty big assumption, especially when their attendance has gone from 3.2 million to 2.4 million in a city with 25% unemployment. With Illitch looking at buying the Pistons and building a new arena, I have seen speculation as low as $75 million payroll next year for the Tigers. Most experts are looking at around $100 million realisitically, with $120 as the absolute highest. The numbers started at $65 million in payroll commitments for 2011 before any signings. Add in Peralta and Benoit, and we are at $75 million already. With the holes they have, signing a couple bats at about $25 million will very possibly end their real spending in the FA market with a disaster of a staff. That isn't enough to do anything in the central next year.
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 01:11 PM) Bud Black and Ron Gardenhire are the Managers of the Year I can't find the voting anywhere, but the release says Black beat Dusty Baker by one point.
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) No love for Washington and Bochy? Remember, it's based only on the regular season.
November 17, 201015 yr QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 10:27 AM) Everything that I've seen says they want to go with Salty at their catcher next year and will spend their money on Beltre and/or trying to get AGon. Gammons and Stark say otherwise and I trust their opinions much more than some of the beat writers out there. It seems like there are so many just horrid rumors out there.

November 18, 201015 yr QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 12:06 PM) Dbacks trade Scott Allen to Yankees for Juan Miranda. who for who???
November 18, 201015 yr QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 18, 2010 -> 01:14 PM) who for who??? Dbacks traded a 19-year-old starter who had pretty good peripherals (9 K/9 to a 2.7 BB/9) for a 28-year-old 1B who is probably just a back-up player. Makes no sense for the Dbacks whom is thought to be trading off their talented players.

Makes no sense for the Dbacks whom is thought to be trading off their talented players. Thanks, hadn't really heard of them before. Sounds like the D-backs may be taking the whole "experience from a winning team" angle a bit too far.
November 18, 201015 yr Shin-Soo Choo looks to be on the verge of getting out of his little commitment. I dunno why I thought it was a World Baseball Classic victory... http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/11/...y-from-freedom/
