Holes at C, 2B/SS (wherever they end up putting Peralta), RF, and DH offensively. Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello are their only 3 guaranteed starters, and I still don't think you can count on Porcello to really do anything yet. They had a 33 year old closer and just signed a 33 year old setup man to a 3 year contract that is worth more annually than Scott Linebrink's deal.

 

I mean, seriously...their signings so far this offseason have included resigning Brandon Inge and Jhonny Peralta and signing Joaquin Benoit. It's obviously still early, but that's like $20 million committed next season to a two terrible hitters (though one of them is good defensively) and a reliever who has had 3 years his entire career and has never put up two good seasons in a row. They aren't being smart with their money right now; what makes you think they will be smart with it later?

I know they have a bunch of money coming off of the books, but to assume they will spend it again is a pretty big assumption, especially when their attendance has gone from 3.2 million to 2.4 million in a city with 25% unemployment. With Illitch looking at buying the Pistons and building a new arena, I have seen speculation as low as $75 million payroll next year for the Tigers. Most experts are looking at around $100 million realisitically, with $120 as the absolute highest. The numbers started at $65 million in payroll commitments for 2011 before any signings. Add in Peralta and Benoit, and we are at $75 million already. With the holes they have, signing a couple bats at about $25 million will very possibly end their real spending in the FA market with a disaster of a staff. That isn't enough to do anything in the central next year.

Dbacks traded a 19-year-old starter who had pretty good peripherals (9 K/9 to a 2.7 BB/9) for a 28-year-old 1B who is probably just a back-up player. Makes no sense for the Dbacks whom is thought to be trading off their talented players.

Thanks, hadn't really heard of them before. Sounds like the D-backs may be taking the whole "experience from a winning team" angle a bit too far.
