Not really. He's due to be bad in year 1, which if he did the alternating good and bad, make him worth his paycheck 1 out of 3 seasons. Maybe the guy has figured something out. I sure hope so. This was the one guy I personally would have stayed away from this offseason. You pay him for 2010 which he was lights out for June, July and August. Just about unhittable. He wasn't very good the rest of the year, had shoulder surgery in 2007 and shoulder issues in 2009. At least its not an obnoxious number they are paying him.

I mean, he's had 5 at least decent seasons out of 7, so I'm not really sure where you're getting this alternating between good and bad thing.

Offseason travel for the physical is always difficult, especially this week.

 

The only reason this deal wouldn't go through is if there's somesthing majorly wrong with his arm that no one knows about.

I like the deal. Hopefully Crain will do for the Sox like he did for the Twins...especially against the Twins!

I can't like a deal in which we give a non-elite relief pitcher 3 guaranteed years. But I like it as far as 2011 goes. Just have to pray after that.

1. DH by committee wasn't a failure, the players IN IT were the failure.

 

2. Closer by committee is not the same animal, at all. They really are not comparable situations.

Yet the DH by committee idea was quickly replaced by Adam DUNN

 

Closer by committee could work, just color me skeptical.

The reason why closers by committee have failed in the past is the exact same reasons that DH by committee failed last year - the players involved were simply not good enough to get the job done. Crain is a good pitcher, Sale is a good pitcher, and Thornton is a good pitcher, and they'll be called upon differently to get different hitters out. Right now, the Sox have 2 good lefties and 2 good righties in the pen, and if they are going to go by a committee approach, I have no problem with that at all. I think they can probably look to bring in one more lefty and perhaps have a 3 lefty bullpen, but really I am perfectly content with everything that has happened this offseason.

 

And quite frankly, I'd rather the Sox spend $13 million on a pitcher who is likely to fall apart as opposed to the $30-36 million that someone will spend on Pavano, who is a pitcher that is likely to fall apart, or the $120 million on Cliff Lee who is likely going to have 1-2 rough years mixed in there. $13 million isn't untradeable.
